What Makes a Mountain Hard to Climb?
Before you can rank the hardest peaks, you have to define “hard.” It’s five things – technical grade, altitude, objective hazard, commitment, and weather – stacked together. Here’s how mountain difficulty is actually measured, how the grades work, and why the hardest mountain isn’t the deadliest.

A mountain’s difficulty comes from technical grade, altitude, objective hazard, commitment, and weather. The hardest peaks score badly on several at once – which is why K2, stacking altitude with real technical climbing, hazard, and no rescue, tops difficulty rankings.
Two things this framework keeps separate: hardest is not deadliest (difficulty vs fatality rate), and difficulty depends on style – oxygen, fixed ropes, season, and route can move the same peak by whole grades.

The five factors
Everything that makes a mountain hard collapses into these.
Ask ten climbers for the hardest mountain and you’ll get several answers, because “hard” isn’t one thing. Every serious difficulty judgement, though, reduces to five factors – and the peaks people argue about are the ones that score badly on most of them simultaneously.

No single factor makes a mountain “the hardest.” Everest is brutally high but technically modest on its normal route; Cerro Torre is barely 3,128 m yet demands elite rock and ice skill in savage weather. The peaks at the very top of any difficulty ranking stack several factors at once – which is exactly why K2 tops our hardest-mountains list.
How the grades work
The scales that turn “hard” into something you can compare.
Climbers use several grading systems, each capturing a different slice of difficulty. The most useful for whole mountains is the French Alpine (Overall Assessment) scale, which rates a route’s total seriousness – not just its hardest move – factoring in length, altitude, hazard, and commitment.

Alongside the Alpine grade sit specialist scales: rock grades (UIAA / YDS) for the technical rock, water-ice grades (WI) for ice pitches, and mixed grades (M) for rock-and-ice terrain. A full route description stacks them – so a Himalayan line might read as “ED, with pitches of WI5 and M6.” You don’t need to memorise them, but knowing that a single scale can’t capture a whole mountain is the key insight.

Hardest vs deadliest
The distinction the framework exists to protect.
The most important thing this framework does is keep two questions apart. Difficulty is how hard the climbing is; fatality rate is how likely you are to die. They overlap – K2 is both hard and deadly – but they aren’t the same list. Annapurna has the highest death rate of any 8,000er, yet its danger is mostly objective avalanche and serac hazard rather than hard climbing. Meanwhile Latok I’s north ridge is one of the hardest problems in alpinism but appears on no death-rate ranking, because so few people ever attempt it.

How style changes difficulty
The same mountain can be moderate or desperate.
Difficulty is never absolute – it’s always relative to how you climb. Fixed ropes, supplemental oxygen, and commercial guiding are the reason Everest’s standard route is far more survivable than its altitude alone implies, and why the same 8,000er can feel “moderate” with full support and brutal without it. Strip the support away – no oxygen, no fixed lines, in winter, or by a new route – and an “easy” 8,000er becomes one of the hardest things in the sport. When you read that a peak is PD or ED, always ask: in what style, in what season, by which route?

The practical payoff of all this is progression – matching each objective to skills you’ve already proven one grade lower. Most climbers build from non-technical trekking peaks and early altitude experience toward technical alpine routes, adding glacier travel, cramponing, and rope skills as they go. They’re French Alpine grades for a route’s overall seriousness: F (easy), PD (a little difficult), AD (fairly hard), D (hard), TD (very hard), ED (extremely hard). Mont Blanc’s normal route is ~PD; the Matterhorn’s Hornli is AD; the hardest faces are ED.
Is the hardest mountain the same as the deadliest?
No – difficulty and fatality rate are different. Annapurna is deadliest by rate through objective hazard; the hardest technical climbs (Cerro Torre, Latok I) have few deaths because few attempt them. See most dangerous mountains.
Does oxygen or a guide make a mountain easier?
