“Deadliest” is not one number. Annapurna leads by published death-to-ascent ratio; K2 leads by difficulty and hazard; the Alps lead by absolute deaths. Which Mountain Is the Deadliest?
By the newer published death-to-ascent ratio, Annapurna I is the deadliest major Himalayan peak, at about 13.42%, with Dhaulagiri and K2 close behind. By the strongest combination of fatality evidence, technical difficulty, objective hazard and weak rescue margin, K2 is the more serious mountain overall.
Both answers are correct, because they measure different things. The most dangerous mountain by ratio is not the same as the one with the most deaths, which is not the same as the hardest to survive. This collection keeps those apart, and every peak below links to its own full death-rate analysis.
Read the denominator before the percentage – a low ratio on a rarely climbed peak and a low ratio on a heavily climbed one mean very different things.
The Five Ways to Measure a Mountain’s Deadliness
Almost every argument about “the deadliest mountain” is really an argument about which of these you are using.
Death-to-summit ratio
Deaths / recorded summits. The most common headline number. Clean for well-recorded peaks, misleading where summits are hard to count.
Absolute deaths
Total lives lost. Captures the Alpine and Everest reality – high-traffic peaks with huge absolute tolls but moderate ratios.
Recent-era rate
Deaths in the modern period. Strips out early-expedition disasters. Usually far lower than the historical shorthand, and more relevant to a climber today.
Objective vs controllable
Hazard you can’t manage. Separates avalanche and serac risk, which skill barely reduces, from falls and altitude, which preparation can.

Annapurna I
By the newer published death-to-ascent ratio, Annapurna I leads the major Himalayan peaks. Avalanche and serac exposure on a committing face, not raw technical difficulty, is what makes it so lethal.
K2
K2 pairs a high ratio with the hardest climbing and the weakest rescue margin of the 8000ers. The Bottleneck serac and technical descent define the danger, and the old 25% figure is outdated.
Cho Oyu
The least-deadly eight-thousander and the most-summited, Cho Oyu shows how much the denominator matters: thousands of summits and a low ratio, yet still a death-zone peak.
The Alps: Matterhorn, Eiger, Mont Blanc
The Alpine peaks rarely top a ratio table, but their sheer traffic makes their absolute death tolls among the highest anywhere. Falls, rockfall, congestion and fast weather do the damage.

What is the deadliest mountain in the world?
By published death-to-ascent ratio, Annapurna I is the deadliest major Himalayan peak, at about 13.42% in the current Nepal-Himalaya comparison. By the combination of technical difficulty, objective hazard and weak rescue margin, K2 is often judged the most serious overall. ‘Deadliest’ has more than one honest answer, which is why this collection links to a full analysis for each peak.
Which 8000er has the lowest death rate?
Cho Oyu, at about 1.28% (52 deaths across 4,056 summits), is the least-deadly of the eight-thousanders and the most-summited. That is why it is usually recommended as a first Himalayan objective, though every peak above 8,000 m sits in the death zone.
Why do death rates vary so much between sources?
Because the denominator changes the answer. A death-to-summit ratio, deaths per attempt, deaths in a single season, absolute total deaths and a recent-era rate can all describe the same mountain and produce very different numbers. Historical Annapurna figures near 30% and newer figures near 13% are both real; they measure different things over different periods.
Does a published death rate predict my personal risk?
No. A published ratio describes historical severity across all recorded climbers – guided and unguided, oxygen and none, good seasons and disasters. It is not a forecast of one climber’s odds on one attempt. Your route, season, support, skill and judgment matter more than any headline percentage.
Which mountains kill in which ways?
The lethal mechanism differs by peak: avalanche and serac on Annapurna and the Karakoram, falls and rockfall on the Matterhorn and Eiger, altitude and the icefall on Everest, cold and crevasses on Denali, and fast, severe weather in Patagonia. Reading the mechanism matters more than reading the rank.
How current are these numbers?
