Cho Oyu Death Rate: why the safest 8000er still is not safe
Cho Oyu is the least dangerous of the world’s fourteen 8,000-meter peaks, with a death rate around 1.4 percent, and it is the mountain most climbers choose for their first 8,000er. But safest is not the same as safe. Roughly one climber in seventy who summits does not survive the mountain, a rate far higher than any Alpine peak. Here is what that number really means, why Cho Oyu earns its reputation as the most accessible 8,000er, and why the easiest still kills.
The safest 8,000er, and still one in seventy.
Cho Oyu’s death rate is around 1.35 to 1.4 percent, the lowest of the fourteen 8,000ers, with roughly 50 deaths against 3,680-plus summits. That is comparable to Everest’s roughly 1 percent and a world away from the deadly giants like Annapurna and K2. It earns the title through a largely non-technical standard route and strong commercial support. But roughly one death for every seventy summits is still far more dangerous than any Alpine peak per climber, and the “easiest 8,000er” label is exactly what leads climbers to underestimate it.
The death rate
The lowest of the fourteen, but still an order of magnitude above the Alps.
Cho Oyu, at 8,188 m (26,864 ft), is the sixth-highest mountain in the world, standing on the Nepal-Tibet border roughly 30 km west of Everest. Its name means Turquoise Goddess. Among serious mountaineers it is best known for one statistic: at roughly 1.35 to 1.4 percent, its death rate is the lowest of any 8,000-meter peak, some 50 deaths against more than 3,680 successful ascents. That makes it the safest of the fourteen and puts it close to Everest’s roughly 1 percent. Both sit far below the deadly 8,000ers, where the rate climbs into the teens and twenties. The honest way to read Cho Oyu’s number is therefore in two directions at once: reassuringly low for an 8,000er, and still far more dangerous per climber than the Matterhorn or Mont Blanc.
Why it is the safest
A gentle standard route, short summit day, and strong support stack the odds in the climber’s favour.
Cho Oyu’s low rate is no accident. Its standard Northwest Ridge route, climbed from the Tibet side, is largely non-technical, following gently angled glacier and snow terrain rather than the sustained steep climbing of K2 or the avalanche-swept faces of Annapurna and Nanga Parbat. The summit day is comparatively short and less committing, fixed ropes are in place on the harder sections, and a strong commercial infrastructure supports most expeditions. Objective hazard, the rockfall, serac, and avalanche danger that drives the deadliest peaks, is lower here than almost anywhere else in the 8,000-meter world. Lower technical difficulty and lower objective hazard together produce the safest big peak in the Himalaya, which is why Cho Oyu is the second most-climbed 8,000er after Everest and the standard choice for a first one.
Why climbers still die
The killer here is altitude, and the trap is the word “easy.”
Nothing about 8,188 m is easy. The leading causes of death on Cho Oyu are not falls or technical failure but altitude itself: high-altitude cerebral and pulmonary edema, cold, exhaustion, and sudden weather, with occasional avalanche or serac hazard on the route. The danger is amplified by perception. Because Cho Oyu is marketed and remembered as the easiest 8,000er, some climbers arrive with too little high-altitude experience, or press on toward the summit when the sensible choice is to turn around. Above 8,000 meters, in the death zone, that single misjudgment can be fatal on the gentlest terrain. The mountain’s low death rate reflects its route, not any softness in the altitude.
The label is true only in relative terms, and it quietly encourages underestimation. Cho Oyu still demands full 8,000-meter respect: proper acclimatization, high-altitude fitness, a hard turnaround discipline, and the experience to read your own body in the death zone. Treated as a genuine 8,000er it is the safest of the fourteen. Treated as a walk-up, it kills.
