Once the mountain is chosen, preparation stops being generic. Training, fitness, technical skills, gear, altitude experience, mental readiness and logistics all need to match the route you actually intend to climb.
Prepare for the route, not for “mountaineering” in general.
A non-technical high-altitude trek, a glacier climb, a cold volcano, a technical alpine route and a multi-week expedition do not require the same training emphasis or skills. The correct preparation plan begins with the mountain and identifies which capabilities must already be reliable before departure.

Mountains add uncertainty. Weather, cold, poor sleep, route changes, heavier packs and slower movement all consume capacity. Strong preparation leaves margin for those differences instead of assuming the trip will unfold exactly like training.

What should I do first after choosing a mountain?
Confirm the likely route and support model, then take the Mountain Readiness Assessment. Preparation should begin with the gap between what the route requires and what you can already do reliably.
Is physical fitness the most important part of mountaineering preparation?
Fitness is important, but it is not interchangeable with technical competence, altitude experience, expedition systems, mental readiness or logistics. A strong physical profile can coexist with serious gaps elsewhere.
Can I learn glacier travel or crevasse rescue from Global Summit Guide?

How early should I start training for a major mountain?
