Makalu is the fifth-highest mountain on Earth and, among serious mountaineers, one of the most respected. Its death rate is moderate by 8,000-meter standards, around 4 percent, but that number hides the real story: Makalu is a genuinely technical climb, with an exposed summit pyramid near the top that has to be climbed, not walked. What the number does not show is why Makalu commands such respect: its danger is technical. The summit pyramid is a real climb at extreme altitude, and there is no easy way up.

Why it is so demanding

The upper mountain also involves knife-edge ridges and serious exposure. Where Cho Oyu offers a gently angled standard route that many climbers can manage with support, Makalu offers nothing of the kind. It is a mountaineer’s 8,000er, chosen by climbers who want a genuine technical challenge, and that is precisely why it carries a higher rate than the accessible peaks.
Reaching the base of the summit pyramid is not the same as summiting. The final technical step turns climbers back close to the top and is where fatigue, altitude, and difficulty combine most dangerously. Climbers who arrive at the pyramid late, slow, or spent face a hard climb with a hard descent still to come, and that is the point on Makalu where good decisions matter most.

The exposed summit pyramid and the upper ridges mean that a stumble, a slow day, or a decision to push on when depleted can be fatal in ways they might not be on a gentler peak. Avalanche and serac hazard on the approach and lower mountain add objective risk, and Makalu’s relative remoteness makes rescue slower and less certain than on the busier 8,000ers. It is the combination, hard climbing plus thin air plus exposure, rather than any single cause, that gives Makalu its middle-of-the-pack rate.
