    Current seasonal status: Pico de Orizaba is in the June-to-September wet season, outside the most reliable November-to-March climbing window. We have not independently verified a same-day Jamapa Glacier field report, so this page separates known seasonal conditions from the road, hut, snow, ice, and route details that must be confirmed locally.

    July weather context During the wet season, afternoon cloud, precipitation, and unstable summit weather are more common. A forecast for Tlachichuca or a lower-elevation grid point is not a summit forecast: the upper mountain can be substantially colder and windier. Use the dedicated Pico de Orizaba weather and best-season guide, then confirm the immediate summit window with your operator.

    The retreat – and why it matters

    This is a live, on-the-ground change, reshaping the climb season by season.

    The Jamapa, or Glaciar Norte, is one of Mexico’s last surviving glaciers and the country’s largest remaining glacier body. A peer-reviewed update measured its area at approximately 0.37 km² in May 2024, down from about 0.46 km² in 2019, with the glacier front near 5,130 m. A separate 2024 study described a continuing loss of area and thickness and modeled the glacier’s eventual disappearance. Those findings establish the long-term direction; they do not provide a same-day climbing-surface report.

    For climbers, retreat means that older route descriptions can age quickly: exposed rock, snow coverage, ice hardness, and the point where teams step onto the glacier may differ from historic accounts. The glacier also contributes to the Jamapa River basin, so its decline matters beyond mountaineering. Use the research below for long-term context, but use a dated local field report for the route you will actually encounter.

    The upper glacier – smaller and thinner with every season. As the ice pulls back and thins, more of the mountain is bare rock and scree, and the remaining glacier surface is increasingly hard, smooth ice.

    What the retreat means for your climb

    Three practical changes you’ll actually encounter on the mountain.

    First, more rock and scree. As the ice pulls back, more of the lower and middle mountain is exposed volcanic rock and loose scree – the maze section below the ice is longer and looser, and route-finding matters more. Second, a harder, icier glacier surface. Climbers may encounter firm snow or hard ice on the upper slopes, where a slip can have serious consequences. Third, and most importantly, the South Face is now a real, day-of decision. Some operators retain the non-glaciated South Face as an alternative when they judge the north-side Jamapa conditions unsuitable.

    The hardening-ice trap. A fall on firm snow or ice high on the summit cone is a major hazard, as a 2023 roped-team accident on the Jamapa Glacier tragically demonstrated. Solid cramponing and a confident self-arrest are not optional skills here. If your team is not comfortable moving securely on firm, steep snow or ice, the correct decision may be an alternative route or a turnaround.     The standard north-side climb stages from Piedra Grande and passes through rocky or mixed terrain before gaining the Jamapa Glacier and the upper summit cone. What matters on a conditions page is not repeating every route detail, but identifying the variables that change: where snow begins, whether the Labyrinth is snow-covered or loose, whether the glacier is firm snow or hard ice, how visible crevasses are, and whether the current track is suitable for the team.     The retreat makes current beta more important than ever. Where to look before you climb:

    The best source is a Tlachichuca-based guide or operator who can give you a dated report from a recent team. Ask five direct questions: When was your last guided summit attempt? What was the glacier surface? Where did teams put on crampons? What is the Piedra Grande road and hut status? Which route do you recommend for my dates? Then cross-check a summit-level weather forecast and recent climber reports. A report without a date is not current beta.

    Road access deserves its own check. A January 2026 local report described severe deterioration on the road toward Piedra Grande. That does not establish today’s condition, but it is a strong reason to confirm 4WD access directly rather than assuming the normal approach is operating.

    A dated 2026 conditions report for the standard Matterhorn route: current verification limits, recent rockfall reports, snow and crampon guidance, fixed-rope status, the Hörnlihütte, the 03:30 starting order and the official sources climbers should check before leaving Zermatt.

    The Hörnlihütte is open, but the current climbing status must be confirmed because a recent report described rockfall and a pause in local guiding.

    The official hut opened on June 26, 2026. ZERMATTERS schedules Matterhorn ascents from mid-July to mid-September when route and summit conditions permit and confirms the approximately 03:30 starting order.

    A July 9 field report described the ridge as exceptionally dry and stated that local guides had stopped guiding because of recent rockfall. That report is valuable but is not an official closure notice and does not establish today’s status. Confirm whether guiding has resumed, whether new snow has fallen and whether loose-rock activity remains elevated.

    Recent field report: July 9, 2026

    A useful observation with strict limits on what it can prove.

    A climber who ascended the Hörnli Ridge on July 9 described the Matterhorn as exceptionally dry, with very little snow remaining on the route. The climber carried microspikes after a small storm but did not use them and did not carry an ice axe or rope.

    The same report stated that guides had stopped guiding the mountain because of recent rockfall, which resulted in very few parties being on the route. That statement is important evidence of a recent hazard response, but it does not identify an official closure order, the exact duration of the pause or whether normal guiding has resumed.

    Do not copy the solo climber’s equipment choices. The report describes one fast, highly experienced individual on one date. ZERMATTERS requires crampon competence and lists crampons as required Matterhorn equipment. Follow the guide’s equipment list and protection system.

    ZERMATTERS explains that climbers must maintain a fast pace to return before daytime warming increases risks such as falling rocks and unstable snow. That is a readiness and turnaround issue—not evidence that a specific clock time makes the ridge safe.

    Carry crampons and be competent using them on rock, snow and firn. The exact fitting point depends on the route surface and the guide’s system. Do not claim that every team must put them on at the Shoulder, below Solvay or at any other fixed elevation.

    Fixed ropes, cables and stanchions

    Established route features do not equal a verified maintenance report.

    The Hörnli Ridge includes fixed ropes, cables and metal anchors on selected steep passages. They assist movement, but the climb remains an alpine route requiring a rope, competent protection decisions and efficient down-climbing.

    The former page claimed that every named fixed section was active from the June 26 hut opening. The hut-opening date does not independently prove that every cable, rope and anchor has no damage. No current public maintenance bulletin for each section was located during this review.

    Follow the guide’s protection system. Do not describe the Hörnli as a via ferrata or prescribe a via ferrata lanyard for every climber. Report damaged fixed equipment to the hut or guide service and do not rely on a questionable line.
