That is changing fast. In 2025 a veteran Mexican mountaineer who first climbed the peak in 1968 described standing on the glacier and hearing it melt — “warm rain” on the ice, meltwater running off, and a cavity between the ice and the rock large enough to crawl into. The science backs up what he felt: the glacier is shrinking, thinning, and warming, and the projection is that within a few years it will no longer function as a glacier below the summit.     Is the Jamapa Glacier disappearing?

    Yes. It’s Mexico’s last remaining glacier and in rapid retreat — from ~0.46 sq km in 2019 to 0.37 by 2024. A 2024 UNAM study concluded it has reached the point of no return, projecting that by the end of this decade glacier conditions will exist only near the summit. Popocatépetl already lost all its glaciers and Iztaccíhuatl’s is nearly gone.

    Can you still climb Pico de Orizaba as the glacier retreats?

    Yes — it’s still very much climbed, but the retreat is changing the route: more exposed rock and scree low down, and a harder, icier upper glacier. When the Jamapa is too icy, guides switch to the non-glaciated South Face. It remains a serious high-altitude climb needing crampons, ice axe, and glacier judgement.

    Do you need a rope and glacier gear on the Jamapa Glacier?

    Technical crampons and a mountaineering ice axe are mandatory — microspikes are not sufficient. The glacier is now relatively crevasse-light but not crevasse-free, so rope-team travel remains standard and is strongly recommended. Follow your guide’s judgement on the day.

    North Face or South Face on Pico de Orizaba?

    The single biggest question before a Matterhorn attempt isn’t fitness or fear — it’s whether the route is in condition. Here’s when the Hörnli Ridge comes good through the season, what “in condition” actually means, and exactly where to check live before you commit.

    What “in condition” means

    Climbers on the Hörnli Ridge — dry rock is the whole game.

    The Hörnli Ridge is graded AD (UIAA III–IV+), but that grade assumes one thing: dry rock. “In condition” means the lower half of the route has dried out — winter snow has melted off the rock, leaving it climbable at close to the guidebook grade. Over the early summer the ridge progressively “dries out” from the bottom up, and in most years it comes into condition by early July. Above roughly 4,000 m there is almost always some snow, and crampons are typically worn from the Shoulder to the summit regardless.

    Crucially, condition is not permanent. A spell of poor weather can snow up the lower rocks again, putting the route temporarily “out of condition” — at which point guides simply climb something else in the Zermatt valley. A return to good weather usually clears the fresh snow within a day or two and brings the route back. This is exactly why a static forecast is never enough: the mountain’s condition can flip within a single weather cycle.

    On dry rock the Hörnli feels like sustained, exposed scrambling with a few short pitches. Add snow or ice to that same terrain and everything changes: holds disappear, route-finding gets harder, and moving in crampons on rock that should be dry slows a team badly — which matters enormously on a route where speed is safety. Parties that are too slow get caught by afternoon weather or run out of daylight, and most Matterhorn accidents happen on the descent, when fatigue compounds poor conditions. A route that’s marginally out of condition doesn’t just lower your odds of summiting — it raises the odds of an accident. That’s why guides turn parties around, or switch peaks, without hesitation when the ridge isn’t right.

    The daily timing rule

    On the Matterhorn, the hour matters as much as the month.

    Even in perfect season conditions, the day has its own rule: leave the Hörnli Hut by 4 a.m. The Matterhorn builds afternoon convective storms with extraordinary speed, and parties caught above the Shoulder (around 4,200 m) after midday face the most serious descent on any regularly-climbed Alpine peak. The aim is to summit early and be well down before the weather turns.     No article can tell you whether the Hörnli Ridge is climbable on your specific date — only the people on the mountain can. The most reliable source is a Zermatt mountain guide: guides who climb the route dozens of times a season read current rockfall patterns, weather windows, and the daily condition reports from the Hörnli Hut warden, and they make the call each morning.     Usually by early July, once winter snow melts off the lower rocks, through September — July and August most reliably. “In condition” means the lower rock is dry enough to climb near the guidebook grade; some snow almost always remains above 4,000 m.

    What does “in condition” mean on the Matterhorn?

    The lower half of the Hörnli Ridge has dried out — winter snow has melted off the rock, leaving it climbable near the guidebook grade. Bad weather can snow it up again temporarily; returning good weather usually clears it within a day or two.
