Makalu Expedition Cost: Permits, Fees & Full Budget
The official Makalu climbing royalty is only one line in the budget. Nepal currently charges foreign climbers US$3,000 in spring, US$1,500 in autumn and US$750 in winter or summer for non-Everest, non-Manaslu peaks above 8,000 metres. The expedition itself is far more expensive: current public programs range from a Nepal-based example around US$14,600 to a premium international-led example at US$54,000, before personal travel and some exclusions.
How much does a Makalu expedition cost?
A current Makalu expedition can span roughly the mid-teens to US$50,000+ before every personal expense is included. Makalu Adventure currently advertises a spring 2027 expedition at US$14,600, while Madison Mountaineering lists its April–May 2027 program at US$54,000. Those prices are not interchangeable products. The real comparison is oxygen, personal-Sherpa or guide structure, domestic flights, base-camp services, permits, liaison/government administration, fixed-line and route charges, insurance, gear, tips, summit bonus and contingency. The official spring climbing royalty itself is US$3,000 per foreign climber.
The Permit Is Important—but It Does Not Explain the Expedition Price
Makalu’s royalty is far below Everest’s, yet the full climb remains expensive because a technical 8,000-metre expedition needs weeks of logistics, high-altitude staff, oxygen, communications and a remote approach.
Makalu Is a Remote Logistics Problem Before It Is a Summit Problem
Kathmandu administration, domestic transport to eastern Nepal, the long approach through Makalu-Barun National Park, base-camp freight and high-altitude support all sit underneath the summit price.
Budget geography
Every leg adds transport, staff time or cargo.
Makalu Costs Less to License Than Everest—and Still Demands a Full 8,000-Metre System
The low royalty does not reduce the technical summit pyramid, remote approach, oxygen requirement, staffing burden or weeks of high-altitude logistics. A permit comparison is not an expedition-cost comparison.
Makalu Climbing Royalty & Protected-Area Fee
Nepal’s Department of Tourism updated foreign-climber royalties effective September 1, 2025. Makalu falls in the “other mountains above 8,000 m” tier, excluding Everest and Manaslu.
| Charge | Current amount | Who pays | What it is | Budget treatment |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Spring Makalu royalty | US$3,000 | Each foreign climber | Department of Tourism climbing royalty | Normally arranged through the expedition agency |
| Autumn Makalu royalty | US$1,500 | Each foreign climber | Department of Tourism climbing royalty | Lower fee, but not the main commercial season |
| Winter / summer royalty | US$750 | Each foreign climber | Department of Tourism climbing royalty | Specialized expedition timing, not a simple budget alternative |
| Makalu-Barun National Park | NPR 3,000 | Foreign visitor | Protected-area entrance fee | Confirm whether the operator includes it in the quoted package |
| Garbage-management deposit | US$3,000 | Expedition team | Deposit for an expedition on a mountain above 8,000 m | Team-level deposit; should not be treated as a US$3,000 per-client fee |
| Restricted-area permit | Route dependent | If itinerary enters listed restricted areas | Department of Immigration rules include specified wards in Sankhuwasabha | Have the agency confirm whether the exact caravan route triggers it |
What this rebuild removes from the old page
We could verify the official climbing royalty, Makalu-Barun National Park fee and government garbage-deposit schedule. We could not verify a separate nationwide “Makalu Base Camp Permit = US$70” in the current official fee sources, so this rebuild does not present that number as a mandatory government fee.
Where a Makalu Expedition Budget Actually Goes
The useful model is not permit + package. It is package + exclusions + personal travel + contingency, with every major support component checked in writing.
Royalty & park fees
Spring royalty is US$3,000 per foreign climber; park entry is NPR 3,000. Garbage deposit is team-level.
Check whether every government and local charge is already included.Base-camp logistics
Tents, kitchen, food, staff, communications, freight, generators or charging and medical support vary sharply by operator.
Ask for the actual Base Camp service specification.Climbing Sherpa / guide
Personal-Sherpa support, high-camp carries, summit assistance and spare staff can explain thousands of dollars of price difference.
Get the client-to-Sherpa structure in writing.Supplemental oxygen
Current Seven Summit Treks Makalu material advertises four oxygen bottles on its full-board program. Other operators use different allocations.
Compare bottles, flow rates, mask/regulator system and spare policy.Domestic flights & freight
Tumlingtar flights, helicopters or road transfers, porter/yak loads and cargo movements can be included or billed separately.
Ask what happens when weather disrupts the planned transport.Flights, gear & insurance
International airfare, 8,000m boots/down suit, rescue-capable insurance, satellite data and personal hotels can sit outside the quote.
These are real expedition costs even when the operator never invoices them.
Makalu Does Not Have Everest’s Dense Expedition Infrastructure
Smaller teams and a remote eastern-Nepal approach mean transport, freight and staff systems matter more than a simple “price per altitude metre” comparison suggests.
Makalu Expedition Prices Can Differ by Nearly US$40,000
The price gap is real because these are different products. Compare support structure and exclusions before using the lowest or highest number as “the Makalu price.”
| Current example | Published price | Duration / date | Published support clues | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Makalu Adventure · Spring | US$14,600 | Spring 2027; published fixed departure | 50-day program; company offers full expedition service | Exact oxygen, Sherpa ratio, permit inclusion, summit bonus and exclusions on the selected service tier |
| Makalu Adventure · Autumn | US$17,500 | Autumn 2026 / 2027 published departures | Same operator, different season | Why autumn pricing exceeds spring despite the lower government royalty |
| Makalu Adventure · Winter | US$30,500 | Winter departure published for Dec. 2026 | Specialized winter expedition | Cold-weather staffing, oxygen and contingency structure |
| Madison Mountaineering | US$54,000 | Apr. 13–May 25, 2027 | American guide, support staff, porters, cooks, climbing Sherpas, oxygen/medical items, permits, garbage deposit/removal and liaison officer listed in inclusions | Personal oxygen allocation, summit bonus/tips, rescue insurance and personal gear |
| Seven Summit Treks | Quote / inquire | Apr. 8–May 27, 2027 fixed departure | Publishes 1 climber : 1 Sherpa and 4 oxygen bottles | Current quote and exact included/excluded cost structure |
| Elite Exped | Inquire | 51 days; spring & summer | Requires multiple 6,000/7,000m ascents plus at least one 8,000er | Guide ratio, oxygen, travel logistics and price before comparing it with public packages |

Oxygen & Personal Sherpa Can Change the Quote More Than the Permit
Makalu’s upper mountain is technical enough that “oxygen included” and “Sherpa included” are not sufficient descriptions. The budget needs to specify quantity, scope and redundancy.
- Oxygen: number of bottles per climber, planned flow rates, mask/regulator system and team spares.
- Personal Sherpa: whether 1:1 support applies throughout the climb or only on the summit push.
- Load carries: which personal items move to Camps 2–4 and whether extra carries cost more.
- Summit bonus: Seven Summit Treks currently lists a minimum US$1,500 summit bonus for the climbing Sherpa as an exclusion on its Makalu page.
- Tips: separate staff gratuities may also be expected.
Eight Expenses That Commonly Sit Outside the Headline Price
Two operator quotes are only comparable after every major exclusion is restored.
International airfare
Flights to Kathmandu are normally personal costs and can change significantly by origin and booking timing.
Insurance
Verify high-altitude mountaineering and helicopter-evacuation coverage at the expedition’s actual maximum elevation.
Personal 8,000m gear
Down suit, boots, mitts, sleeping system and other specialist gear can add several thousand dollars if purchased new.
Summit bonus & tips
Some operators explicitly exclude the climbing-Sherpa summit bonus and staff gratuities.
Extra oxygen
Additional bottles or higher-flow plans may sit outside the standard allocation.
Extra hotels / meals
Weather delays before or after the published itinerary can create Kathmandu costs outside the package.
Helicopter contingency
Approach or evacuation helicopters can become a major expense depending on contract and insurance reimbursement.
Communications & charging
Satellite data, personal device charging or premium communications may carry separate expedition charges.
A Cheap Summit Package Is Not Cheap If the Contingency System Is Missing
Weather delays, oxygen failure, illness, a missed domestic flight or a helicopter extraction are exactly the scenarios a complete expedition budget has to survive.
The US$3,000 Garbage Deposit Is an Expedition-Team Deposit
Nepal’s Department of Tourism Schedule 9 sets a US$3,000 garbage-management deposit for non-Everest mountains above 8,000 m in the applicable Himalayan ranges. It is not the same thing as a US$3,000 per-client royalty.
Ask how the operator handles it.
A full-service package may already include the deposit, removal fee and administrative handling. Madison’s current Makalu package explicitly lists climbing permits, garbage deposit/removal fee and liaison officer among its inclusions. Do not add the full team deposit again to every client’s personal budget.
Season Changes More Than the Permit Price
Makalu’s government royalty falls outside spring, but the operator examples show why the expedition itself can become more expensive when conditions and logistics become more specialized.
| Season | Foreign royalty | Commercial pattern | Budget implication |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spring | US$3,000 | Main commercial Makalu window | Highest government royalty but widest current operator availability |
| Autumn | US$1,500 | Less common | Lower royalty does not guarantee a cheaper operator package; Makalu Adventure currently prices autumn above its spring departure |
| Winter | US$750 | Specialized | Cold and operational difficulty can make the expedition dramatically more expensive despite the lowest royalty |
| Summer | US$750 | Highly specialized / monsoon context | Not a normal cost-saving alternative for a standard commercial ascent |
The Budget Should Match the Mountain’s Technical Seriousness
Makalu is not the place to buy the cheapest possible support structure and assume commercial infrastructure will compensate. The normal route remains technical high on the mountain, when decision quality and physiological reserve are both limited.
Ten Questions to Ask Before Comparing Makalu Prices
The best quote comparison removes marketing language and forces every operator into the same categories.
Permit included?
Confirm the seasonal climbing royalty, park entry and any route-specific permits are included.
Garbage deposit?
Ask whether the team deposit and waste-removal administration are included or separately collected.
Sherpa ratio?
Get the exact client-to-climbing-Sherpa ratio and when that support applies.
Oxygen bottles?
Number of bottles, flow strategy, mask/regulator, Sherpa oxygen and team spares.
Domestic travel?
Identify every flight, road transfer, helicopter leg and weather-delay responsibility.
High-camp loads?
Ask what staff carry and whether personal high-camp carries generate extra fees.
Summit bonus?
Confirm climbing-Sherpa bonus and staff-tip expectations before the trip.
Insurance minimum?
Know both your policy requirement and what staff insurance the operator provides.
Weather extension?
Who pays for extra Base Camp, Kathmandu, flights or staff when the itinerary runs long?
Cancellation terms?
Understand what happens to the deposit after illness, government closure, route failure or expedition cancellation.
On Makalu, Contingency Is Part of the Expedition Cost
Domestic-flight disruption, approach delays, weather holds, extra oxygen, additional hotel nights and emergency transport are not edge cases on a remote 8,000-metre expedition. Keep a reserve outside the operator invoice rather than budgeting to the exact quoted price.
Direct Answers for Budget Planning
Permit numbers are based on current Nepal government schedules; package prices are current operator examples and can change.
How much is the Makalu climbing permit?
For foreign climbers, Nepal currently charges US$3,000 in spring, US$1,500 in autumn and US$750 in winter or summer for Makalu. The updated royalty schedule took effect September 1, 2025.
How much does Makalu-Barun National Park cost?
Nepal Tourism Board currently lists the foreign-visitor entrance fee for Makalu-Barun National Park at NPR 3,000 per person per entry. Keep the fee in Nepalese rupees when budgeting because the USD equivalent changes with exchange rates.
Is there a separate US$70 Makalu Base Camp permit?
Global Summit Guide could not verify a separate nationwide US$70 “Makalu Base Camp Permit” in the current Department of Tourism and Nepal Tourism Board fee sources used for this rebuild. Ask your registered expedition agency to itemize any local, restricted-area or caravan-route charge attached to your exact itinerary.
How much does a guided Makalu expedition cost?
Current public examples span widely. Makalu Adventure advertises spring 2027 at US$14,600, while Madison Mountaineering lists its April–May 2027 expedition at US$54,000. The difference reflects support structure, inclusions and operating model, so compare line items rather than treating either number as a universal Makalu price.
What is the Makalu garbage deposit?
Nepal’s current mountaineering fee schedule lists a US$3,000 garbage-management deposit for expeditions on non-Everest mountains above 8,000 m in the applicable ranges. It is an expedition-team deposit, not a US$3,000 fee charged separately to every climber.
Why can autumn or winter cost more if the permit is cheaper?
The government royalty is only one small line. Lower-demand seasons can require more specialized staffing, cold-weather systems, logistics and contingency. Makalu Adventure currently publishes an autumn price above its spring price and a much higher winter price despite the lower winter royalty.
What costs are most often excluded from Makalu packages?
International airfare, personal high-altitude gear, rescue-capable insurance, staff tips, climbing-Sherpa summit bonus, extra oxygen, some communications and weather-delay expenses are common items to check. Exact exclusions vary by operator.
Recheck the Live Quote Before Paying
Government fees change less often than package pricing. Operator prices should always be checked again before a deposit.
Fee and price review completed September 20, 2026.
Do Not Compare Permit Prices. Compare Complete Expedition Systems.
Makalu’s US$3,000 spring royalty is straightforward. The real financial decision is what sits behind the operator quote: personal-Sherpa coverage, oxygen, domestic transport, high-camp logistics, Base Camp services, government administration, tips, insurance and contingency. Put every quote into the same line-item budget before deciding what is actually cheaper.
