    What “in condition” means

    Why the same route can be a clean climb one week and a no-go the next.

    On the Matterhorn, “in condition” is shorthand for a specific state: the winter snowpack and any recent fresh snow have melted off the lower and middle rock of the Hörnli Ridge, leaving it largely dry to the Shoulder (around 4,200 m), with firmer snow and ice only on the upper mountain near the summit. In that state the route can be climbed at close to its guidebook grade – sustained but manageable AD rock. Load it with fresh snow, and the same terrain turns slow, slippery, and dangerous until a day or two of good weather clears the rock again.

    That’s why this page exists as a living tracker rather than a one-time guide: the route’s state swings with the weather through the summer.     “In condition” still means seriousEven in perfect condition, the Hörnli Ridge is a graded alpine climb that has killed roughly 500 people since 1865, most of them on the descent. A good conditions report lowers the odds of a bad day; it does not turn the Matterhorn into a walk-up. Sustained Grade III rock, big exposure, and a long down-climb are the baseline even on the best day of the year.

    Crowds ease and the route is often in excellent dry condition, but daylight shortens and verglas – a thin ice glaze on cold rock – becomes more likely on early mornings. Weather can also turn faster. A good window here is superb; a bad one closes quickly.

    Once the hut winds down its staffed season and the snow returns, the Hörnli Ridge becomes a committing winter mountaineering objective for experienced parties only. Not the season this tracker is built for.

    Hörnli Hut status

    The gateway to the route – and a booking you can’t leave late.

    The Hörnlihütte at 3,260 m is the launch point for every Hörnli Ridge attempt. It typically runs a staffed season from roughly mid-June to mid or late September, sleeps about 130, and serves half board. Peak July–August dates sell out three to six months in advance, so a bed reservation is often the true bottleneck on a Matterhorn trip – not the weather. Book through the official site (hoernlihuette.ch); a night runs roughly 130–180 CHF with dinner and breakfast.

    The 03:30 departure orderThe hut runs a fixed pre-dawn departure order: Zermatt guides and their guests leave first (around 03:30), outside guides next, then unguided teams. Being behind slower parties means rockfall from above and timing pressure into the afternoon – which is a large part of why climbers deliberately hire Zermatt-based guides. Whatever your plan, the early start is non-negotiable: you want to be off the upper ridge before the afternoon builds.

    Fixed ropes & the Shoulder

    Helpful, maintained in season – and not a substitute for climbing ability.

    The Hörnli Ridge carries fixed ropes on several of its steeper steps, concentrated on the upper mountain above the Shoulder (around 4,200 m) and on the summit snow. These are maintained through the climbing season and are normally in place during the main summer window, though their exact state can change after storms or at the very start and end of the season. They speed movement and add security on the crux steps — but you still climb, and more importantly down-climb, sustained Grade III terrain between them. If you’re relying on the ropes to get you up ground you couldn’t otherwise manage, the descent will find you out.

    The weather window

    The freezing level, the Föhn, and the afternoon clock — the three things that decide your day.

    Three weather factors govern a Matterhorn attempt more than the raw forecast temperature. First, the freezing level: you want it low enough overnight that the rock refreezes. After warm nights with a high freezing line, the rock never locks up, and rockfall risk climbs sharply — guides quietly push trips when the freezing level stays high. Second, the Föhn, a warm southerly wind that can make the mountain unclimbable with little notice; check for Föhn alerts in particular.     Is the Hörnli Ridge in condition right now?

    The ridge is “in condition” when fresh and winter snow have cleared off the lower and middle rock, leaving it dry to the Shoulder. In a normal year that’s from about early July, with mid-July to mid-August most reliable. A storm can put it temporarily out of condition until a day or two of good weather clears the rock. Confirm the current state with the Zermatt guides and the hut — the status box here reflects our last update, not your climbing day.

    When does the Matterhorn come into condition?

    Usually by early July as the winter snow melts off the lower rock. Main season is mid-July to mid-September, with mid-July to mid-August busiest and most settled. Early season can hold snow; September can bring verglas and shorter days. Exact timing shifts year to year with the snowpack.

    Is the Hörnli Hut open and how do I book?

    It typically runs mid-June to mid/late September, sleeps ~130, and serves half board. Peak July–August dates sell out 3–6 months ahead — book early via hoernlihuette.ch. A night is roughly 130–180 CHF with dinner and breakfast.

    Are the fixed ropes in place?

    The upper Hörnli Ridge above the Shoulder (~4,200 m) has maintained fixed ropes on the steeper steps, normally in place during the main season. Their state can change after storms or early/late season. They help, but you still climb and down-climb Grade III terrain — check with the Zermatt guides or hut guardian.

    What weather window do I need?

    A settled multi-day high-pressure window with a low overnight freezing level so the rock refreezes. Watch for Föhn and fast-building afternoon storms, leave the hut by ~03:30–04:00, and be descending by early afternoon. Cross-check MeteoSwiss and Mountain-Forecast, and defer to the hut guardian’s board.

    This tracker is refreshed through the Matterhorn season. The status box and figures are compiled from MeteoSwiss forecasts, the Hörnlihütte and Zermatt guide associations, the Swiss Alpine Club, and Zermatt-area webcams. Elevations are given in metres first with feet alongside, per our convention for European peaks.

    Conditions on the Matterhorn change daily, and the status box reflects our last update date — not a live reading for your climbing day. Alpine climbing is dangerous; the Matterhorn has recorded roughly 500 deaths since 1865, most on the descent. Nothing here substitutes for a current report from the Zermatt guides and the hut guardian, professional guiding, and your own judgement. Verify everything before you climb.
