A supported trek through five ecological zones, a rapid altitude profile and a summit day that begins in darkness and ends after a major descent.
Mount Kilimanjaro is a dormant stratovolcano in northern Tanzania. Uhuru Peak sits on Kibo at 5,895 metres; Mawenzi rises to 5,149 metres, and the eroded Shira cone forms the western plateau. The mountain is commonly described as the world’s highest free-standing mountain and is Africa’s continental high point.
The normal routes do not require technical climbing. Climbers hike established trails while a Tanzanian crew carries camp equipment, food and most group loads. The absence of ropes can create false confidence. Most teams move from low elevation to almost 5,900 metres in less than nine days—much faster than conservative high-altitude sleeping-elevation guidance would normally permit.
Kilimanjaro’s distinctive experience comes from its vertical ecosystems. A western or southern itinerary can move from cultivated foothills into rainforest, heath and moorland, alpine desert and the arctic crater rim. The landscape changes rapidly, but the body’s adaptation does not. That mismatch is why pace and itinerary length dominate the planning decision.

Success Improves With Time—but the Numbers Are Not Audited Equally
There is no single official, consistently defined database covering every route, operator and client. Use ranges as planning evidence, not guarantees.

What an Eight-Day Lemosho Itinerary Looks Like
Camp names vary. The planning value is the gradual western approach, Shira exposure, southern-circuit acclimatization and controlled summit launch.

Summit Night Is an Altitude and Descent Test
Most southern-route teams leave high camp near midnight. The first objective is Stella Point; Marangu and Rongai normally approach Gilman’s Point. Uhuru Peak still lies beyond the rim.
- Wake: eat, dress and confirm headlamp, water and hand protection.
- Dark ascent: slow switchbacks on scree and frozen ground.
- Crater rim: reassess fatigue and symptoms.
- Uhuru traverse: continue to the true high point.
- Descent: leave the altitude and normally continue to a lower camp.
The hardest decision may be turning around near the rim. A strong guide protects the descent rather than allowing the remaining margin to be consumed for a photograph.

Gradual ascent is the primary prevention strategy. Symptom reporting and guide judgment matter every day.

HACE and HAPE are emergencies. Descent is the decisive intervention. Oxygen may support evacuation but should not justify continuing upward.
