Iceland Highlands · Hut booking · Updated October 2026Laugavegur Hut Booking: 2027 Prices, Reservations & Availability
Booking the Laugavegur Trail huts is less about reserving one room and more about securing a complete overnight chain. Learn the official booking process, 2027 hut and campsite fees, cancellation rules, and what to do when a key night is sold out.

How do you reserve huts on the Laugavegur Trail?
Reserve directly with Ferðafélag Íslands (FÍ), the Iceland Touring Association. Choose a connected north-to-south hut itinerary from Landmannalaugar toward Þórsmörk, submit the dates or select an available package, pay in full through FÍ’s secure checkout, and save your confirmation vouchers. A request alone is not a confirmed reservation. FÍ booking terms ↗.
There is no established annual lottery for Laugavegur huts. FÍ has not published a universal 2027 application-opening day in the official material reviewed. Check the live booking system rather than relying on invented release dates or a third-party waitlist.
Need the entire trail, terrain, river crossings, and transport? Read the companion Laugavegur Trail four-day route guide. This page covers reservations, cancellation rules, availability decisions and accommodation costs so the two guides serve different purposes.
How much do the Laugavegur huts cost in 2027?
FÍ has published a 2027 price list. These prices are per person, per night for the listed huts and campsites; transport, food, and showers are separate. Always verify amounts during checkout because FÍ reserves the right to correct its prices.
3 nights in huts · ISK 54,000
Three nights at Hrafntinnusker, Álftavatn and Emstrur, before ending the hike at Þórsmörk. This is a theoretical per-person accommodation subtotal; a 3-night package’s availability and exact pricing must be verified at checkout.
5 nights camping · ISK 18,000
For example, Landmannalaugar, Hrafntinnusker, Hvanngil, Emstrur and Þórsmörk. This is a straight five-night adult campsite subtotal at the published rate; extras and any package adjustments are separate.
Book your Laugavegur huts in seven steps.
- Choose your travel season. July and August usually offer the best hut and route conditions. Opening depends on snow and highland roads, not just the calendar.
- Choose your first walking day and travel direction. FÍ books Laugavegur huts north-to-south, from Landmannalaugar to Þórsmörk.
- Write down every overnight. Standard three-night chain: Hrafntinnusker → Álftavatn → Emstrur. Add Landmannalaugar or Þórsmörk if needed for transport.
- Open FÍ’s official accommodation booking. Use the booking link on its Laugavegur hub or individual hut pages; review packages and available dates.
- Request or select the complete sequence. The operator may confirm availability and send a payment link. Emstrur is specifically package-only at present.
- Pay and save your vouchers. Your dates are confirmed only after the required payment is complete and the operator sends confirmation.
- Only then finalize buses and flights. Before hiking, recheck FÍ, SafeTravel, and the Icelandic road/weather services.

Which Laugavegur huts should you book?
Every hut does a different job in the itinerary. Capacities below are from FÍ’s official hut descriptions, not live seat inventory. Availability must be checked with FÍ.
| Hut | Beds | Best use | Booking note | Official page |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Landmannalaugar | 78 | Optional night before trekking | Start point; kitchen, showers, camping | Hut details ↗ |
| Hrafntinnusker | 52 | Classic night 1 | High-altitude hut; no shower; exposed campsite | Hut details ↗ |
| Álftavatn | 72 | Classic night 2 | Two huts; kitchens, showers, camping | Hut details ↗ |
| Hvanngil | 60 | Alternative night 2 | Different stage spacing; showers and campsite | Hut details ↗ |
| Emstrur / Botnar | 60 | Classic night 3 | Three small huts; package-only bookings currently | Hut details ↗ |
| Þórsmörk / Langidalur | 73 | Finish or extension night | Useful if hiking Fimmvörðuháls or taking an early/late bus | Hut details ↗ |
Three workable accommodation sequences.
3 hut nights
Hrafntinnusker → Álftavatn → Emstrur; finish in Þórsmörk on day four. Check same-day transport at both ends and weather buffer before booking.
2027 baseline: 3 × ISK 18,000 = ISK 54,000/person.
Arrival + finish nights
Landmannalaugar → Hrafntinnusker → Álftavatn or Hvanngil → Emstrur → Þórsmörk. Adds room for bus logistics, but more nights mean more availability constraints.
2027 baseline: 5 × ISK 18,000 = ISK 90,000/person.
Prebook campsites
Use the designated campsites near the huts; bring a strong tent and cooking kit. Campers cannot use hut kitchens. Do not plan on pitching anywhere along the trail.
2027 baseline: 3 campsites = ISK 10,800/person.
Why the middle nights matter most
Hrafntinnusker is small and high, Álftavatn is popular, and Emstrur’s package-only restriction changes how you can book. Start by checking the entire north-to-south chain—not by purchasing an attractive first night before learning whether the remaining nights are possible.
Switching Álftavatn for Hvanngil changes daily hiking distances and river-crossing timing. It is a legitimate itinerary choice, not a like-for-like replacement requiring zero route planning.

Six ways to handle sold-out huts.
1. Shift the entire itinerary
Try different consecutive days, not only the missing hut. A date shift must still keep every overnight in the right order.
2. Compare packages
Look for FÍ’s available 3-, 4- and 5-night products. Package terms may prohibit cancelling individual nights.
3. Ask FÍ directly
Use the official contact channel to clarify date availability and permitted alternatives. No official universal cancellation release time is published.
4. Use Hvanngil carefully
Replacing Álftavatn can change the stage lengths. Confirm your revised walking plan and overnight chain before paying.
5. Reserve camping instead
Camping is an approved alternative at designated sites, but requires suitable gear and its own reservations.
6. Consider a different trip
Explore an alternative Icelandic Highland hike if the only available sequence forces risky distances or unsafe travel dates.

Cancellation rules: the part most booking guides miss.
| Booking | When you cancel | Official refund |
|---|---|---|
| Hut accommodation | 56 or more days before arrival | 75% of accommodation fee |
| Hut accommodation | 55–21 days before arrival | 50% refund |
| Hut accommodation | 20–0 days before arrival | No refund |
| Camping | 2+ days before first booked date | Full refund |
| Camping | 1 day before or on first booked date | No refund |
| Hut package | Any eligible cancellation | Cancel the entire package; individual nights cannot be refunded |
When do Laugavegur reservations open?
There is no official universal 2027 booking-opening date or lottery window confirmed in the source pages reviewed. FÍ’s system accepts bookings and inquiries, but do not mistake a blog’s suggested booking season for a fixed release time.
Use this practical monitoring schedule: check FÍ’s booking hub when planning next summer, check at least monthly until the full dates you want can be requested, and recheck prices, availability and booking policy whenever you receive an offer. This is an editorial planning cadence, not a promised official opening schedule.
Operating window: FÍ’s average summer period runs roughly late June through mid-September. High-country snow, road openings, and river conditions override an advertised calendar window.

Laugavegur hut reservation FAQ
Can I book the Laugavegur huts for 2027?
FÍ provides official booking channels and a published 2027 price sheet. Check the live FÍ booking system for your exact itinerary and dates; this page does not display live inventory.
Is there a Laugavegur hut lottery?
The official material reviewed describes reservations and payment, not an annual hut lottery. No lottery opening date is established.
How much is a Laugavegur hut in 2027?
FÍ lists ISK 18,000 per adult per night for the main huts. Campsites are ISK 3,600 per adult per night, and showers are a separate ISK 1,100 where available.
Can I book only the Emstrur hut?
FÍ currently says Emstrur hut accommodation is package-only and cannot be reserved individually. Use the official package booking flow.
Does FÍ book the trail south to north?
No. Its current hut FAQ specifies bookings north to south, Landmannalaugar to Þórsmörk.
Do I need an overnight permit in addition to a hut booking?
The main reservation requirement is accommodation at designated huts or campsites; there is no separate universal Laugavegur thru-hiking permit described by FÍ. Parking at Landmannalaugar may require its own reservation for certain private-vehicle arrivals.
What if a booked hut is full on one of my nights?
Shift the entire itinerary, compare booking packages, ask FÍ about permitted alternatives, or switch to confirmed designated camping. Do not assume wild camping is allowed.
Can I cancel a hut reservation for a full refund?
Normally not. FÍ lists 75% refund at least 56 days out, 50% at 55–21 days, and none from 20 days before arrival. A specific road-closure exception applies.
Are showers and meals included?
Showers are usually extra and unavailable at Hrafntinnusker. Hut guests should bring meals; limited food or snacks may be sold but selection is unreliable.
Do you need to reserve Laugavegur camping?
Yes. FÍ recommends confirmed, prepaid campsite bookings before starting. Camping is permitted only at designated sites along the managed route.
What is the best month to book for hiking?
The most reliable trekking season is commonly July and August, but the booking date and actual safe trail opening depend on FÍ availability and Highland conditions.
Are Laugavegur huts hotels with private rooms?
No. They are shared mountain sleeping-bag facilities with kitchens and wardens; a private hotel room should not be expected.
