The 1996 Everest Disaster: Into Thin Air, the Storm & What Went Wrong

Eight climbers died during the May 10–11, 1996 Everest storm: five on the Nepal side and three on the Tibet side. The disaster became famous through Jon Krakauer’s Into Thin Air, but the history is larger than one book. Climbers reached the summit late, fixed-rope delays consumed time, teams became stretched apart, supplemental oxygen and radio communication became uncertain, and a severe storm turned a low-margin descent into a survival crisis. The central lesson is not that one person or one forecast “caused” the disaster. It is that multiple small losses of margin accumulated before the weather closed.

The direct answer

The Storm Killed Eight—but the Margin Had Already Been Eroding for Hours.

Adventure Consultants, led by Rob Hall, and Mountain Madness, led by Scott Fischer, launched their summit attempts on May 10. Climbers from other teams were moving on the same route. Delays developed around fixed-rope preparation high on the mountain. Several summiters reached the top later than the conservative turnaround times often discussed before a high-altitude push.

When the weather deteriorated, climbers were spread from the summit ridge to the South Col. Some had supplemental oxygen; others had uncertainty about remaining cylinders or regulators. Visibility collapsed. Strong wind and snow made the route between the Balcony, South Summit, Hillary Step area and South Col far harder to reverse.

On the south side, Rob Hall, Doug Hansen, Andy Harris, Yasuko Namba and Scott Fischer died. Beck Weathers survived after a remarkable return to Camp IV despite severe frostbite. On the north side, Tsewang Smanla, Tsewang Paljor and Dorje Morup of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police expedition died during the same storm.

The American Alpine Club memorial record for Hall explicitly describes eight deaths on both sides during the storm, plus separate fatalities elsewhere in the season. That distinction matters: the famous “1996 disaster” is the May storm event, not every Everest death that year.

The Summit Push Was Only Half the Route.

Camp IV sits around 7,900–8,000 metres. Summit day climbs through the Balcony and South Summit before reaching the top, then reverses the same altitude. By the time the 1996 climbers were descending, the accumulated time above the South Col mattered as much as the distance remaining.

The 1996 disaster is often summarized as “climbers ignored the 2 p.m. turnaround.” Historical accounts are more nuanced: different teams and leaders used different expectations, and not every climber was operating under one hard universal cutoff. But the operational principle is sound. Once the summit schedule slides late, the climber is borrowing daylight, oxygen, warmth and cognitive capacity from the descent.

Survival and rescue

Beck Weathers Became the Disaster’s Most Extraordinary Survival Story.

His survival should not be used to imply that exposure at the South Col is routinely reversible.

Weathers became separated and incapacitated near the South Col. After being assessed as unlikely to survive, he later regained consciousness and returned toward Camp IV under his own power. Severe frostbite ultimately led to major amputations. Other survivors were assisted by climbers and guides moving through the storm, including Anatoli Boukreev’s repeated rescue efforts from the South Col.

The event remains a case study in rescue limits: above 8,000 m, rescuers have little spare capacity, visibility can disappear, and a person who cannot move may be impossible to carry without creating additional casualties.
