Matterhorn 2026 Update: Rockfall, Guides Resume & Season Status
The biggest change since our August update is on the Italian side: guided Matterhorn ascents resumed on August 28 after the temporary pause triggered by the August 5 south-face rockfall and unstable weather. The Swiss and Italian routes still require separate, same-day verification.
The Italian guide pause has ended. That does not mean the Matterhorn is simply “clear.”
The Società Guide del Cervino temporarily stopped guiding clients after the August 5 rockfall and a period of unstable weather. On August 28 the guides announced that conditions had improved enough to resume ascents on the Italian route.
On the Swiss side, ZERMATTERS continues to publish the Hörnli Ridge inside its normal mid-July to mid-September operating window, subject to route and summit conditions.
- Italian Lion Ridge: guided ascents resumed August 28.
- Capanna Carrel: returned to staffed operation August 29.
- Swiss Hörnli: still inside the published late-season window.
- Hörnlihütte: staffed through September 19, 2026.
- Same-day surface: snow, verglas, wind and rockfall still require local verification.
What changed since the August 19 version?
The earlier update correctly reported that Italian guides had suspended client ascents after the August 5 event. That temporary suspension is no longer current. Guided Italian ascents resumed August 28, while the historical rockfall and guide pause remain important parts of the 2026 season record.
Late-Season Matterhorn Dashboard
These are different operating signals. A staffed hut, an advertised guide season and resumed Italian guiding do not certify dry rock or safe conditions on your intended route today.
The temporary guide-company pause following the August 5 rockfall has ended.
ZERMATTERS publishes Matterhorn ascents from mid-July to mid-September, depending on route and summit conditions.
The official hut schedule runs June 26 through September 19, 2026.

Swiss and Italian Status Must Stay Separate
The August rockfall occurred on the south side. The guide decisions that followed cannot automatically be transferred to every Matterhorn ridge.
Zermatt / Hörnlihütte
- Normal route for most first Matterhorn attempts.
- ZERMATTERS publishes a mid-July to mid-September guided window.
- Operation depends on route and summit conditions.
- Hörnlihütte remains staffed through September 19.

Breuil-Cervinia / Capanna Carrel
- August 5: major rockfall occurred on the south face.
- The event did not directly strike the normal Lion Ridge.
- Italian guides nevertheless paused client ascents as a precaution.
- August 28: guides announced that ascents could resume.
- Capanna Carrel returned to staffed operation August 29.
“Guides resumed” is not the same as “all hazards are gone.”
The Italian guide announcement explicitly warned that high-mountain hazards remained and conditions could change rapidly. Treat the reopening as an operational change, not as a permanent safety clearance.
The Matterhorn Season Timeline
Preserve these dated events as history. The current answer belongs at the top; the timeline explains how the season reached today’s status.
Hörnlihütte begins staffed summer operation
The official 2026 hut schedule opened June 26. Hut operation establishes the Swiss-side logistics system; it does not establish safe climbing conditions.
Two climbers die while descending the Hörnli Ridge
Valais Cantonal Police reported that two climbers fell while descending at approximately 4,030 metres. Authorities did not establish the cause of the fall in the initial report.
Additional Matterhorn rescue later the same day
Air Zermatt reported that two climbers stranded above 4,100 metres could no longer continue and had run out of drinks. They were evacuated by longline.
Large rockfall occurs on the Matterhorn’s south face
The event occurred around 3,900 metres. Reporting based on the Italian guide association said no people were involved and the normal Lion Ridge was not directly struck.
Italian guides temporarily suspend Matterhorn client ascents
The Società Guide del Cervino cited the rockfall together with repeated thunderstorms and unstable high-mountain conditions. Climbers were advised against ascending while conditions remained poor.
Italian guided Matterhorn ascents resume
The guide association announced that conditions had improved enough to restart ascents on the Italian route while warning that mountain hazards had not disappeared.
Capanna Carrel returns to staffed operation
Italian reporting said the hut would again be staffed from August 29, with reservation requirements applying.
The season is now late, not simply “open”
Hörnlihütte remains staffed through September 19, while the normal ZERMATTERS guided window is approaching its mid-September endpoint. Fresh snow, shorter days and rapidly changing surface conditions now deserve greater weight in the go/no-go decision.

“Open” is too simple.
One side can pause guiding while another retains its normal seasonal framework. Hut status, guide status and route condition are separate signals.
Temporary events need an end date.
A guide suspension should not remain presented as current after the guides themselves resume operations. Dated update pages must record both events.
The descent remains part of the climb.
The July 12 fatal accident occurred during descent, while additional rescue activity later that day reinforces the need for time and physical reserve.
