    Hard snow deserves respect. In 2023, four climbers died after a roped-team fall above 5,000 m on the Jamapa Glacier. The American Alpine Club accident analysis notes that hard snow around 30–35° can accelerate a falling climber extremely quickly and make self-arrest difficult.

    More exposed rock and scree

    As the lower glacier retreats, older route descriptions can understate the amount of loose volcanic terrain below the ice. The transition between rock, snow and glacier can move from season to season.

    Harder remaining ice

    A smaller glacier can leave more firm, smooth ice exposed during dry or warm periods. The practical consequence is greater dependence on secure crampon technique and conservative guide judgment.

    The glacier is disappearing, but not on a simple fixed-date countdown.

    A 2024 modeling study projects continued fragmentation and eventual loss during the middle of this century. Glacier evolution is nonlinear, so use the research as a long-term trend—not as a promise that a particular section will vanish in a specific year.
