The K2 2008 Disaster: How 11 Climbers Died Near the Bottleneck

Eleven climbers died during and after K2’s August 1, 2008 summit push. The American Alpine Journal records 74 climbers from 10 expeditions attempting K2 that season, with 17 summiters from six teams. Two climbers died in falls before the main serac crisis. Later, ice collapse near the Bottleneck damaged the fixed-line descent system and trapped exhausted climbers above 8,000 metres in darkness. The disaster is best understood as a cascade: early delays, crowding, late summits, objective ice hazard and dependence on shared ropes all converged.

Not Everyone Died in the Serac Collapse—and That Is the Key to Understanding 2008.

The summit push began with too many climbers converging on the same upper Abruzzi route. Problems with rope preparation and traffic slowed movement in the Bottleneck. Serbian climber Dren Mandic fell during the ascent. Pakistani climber Jehan Baig then fell while involved in efforts around Mandic’s body. Those deaths occurred before the main icefall crisis.

Many climbers nevertheless continued. Summit arrivals extended late into the afternoon and evening. During descent, a serac collapse swept Rolf Bae away and cut or stripped fixed ropes from the traverse above the Bottleneck. Climbers now had to reverse steep terrain at extreme altitude without the shared system they expected to use.

Further falls and ice collapses killed Hugues d’Aubarede, Meherban Karim, Gerard McDonnell, three South Korean climbers and two Nepali high-altitude workers. Survivor accounts do not agree on every sequence above the Bottleneck, especially around climbers who became tangled in ropes and McDonnell’s rescue actions. The correct history preserves that uncertainty.

The disaster therefore cannot be reduced to “an avalanche killed 11.” It was a multi-stage event in which the route was already delayed and dispersed before a serac collapse removed part of the descent infrastructure.

The Route’s Most Famous Hazard Is Dangerous Because Climbers Must Pass It Twice.

The couloir and traverse are steep, high and exposed beneath hanging ice. The summit is above them, which means a climber who accepts the objective hazard on ascent must return through it later—more tired, often in darkness, and potentially after the route has changed.

Late Summit Timing Made Every Descent Problem More Expensive.

Once climbers were above the Bottleneck late in the day, turning around did not remove the technical problem. They still had to reverse the traverse and couloir. Darkness, hypoxia and rope damage transformed a difficult descent into an improvised one.

Survivors were hypoxic, exhausted and separated. Darkness and repeated icefall meant no one had a complete view of the upper mountain.
