For most first-time visitors, hike Delicate Arch first, Devils Garden second, and use the Windows area for your easiest high-value walk. Arches does not require advanced timed-entry reservations in 2026, but congestion, parking and desert heat still determine how good your hiking day will be.
What Are the Best Hikes in Arches National Park?
Delicate Arch is the best first hike, Devils Garden is the best long hike, Fiery Furnace is the most unusual navigation experience, and Windows/Double Arch is the best easy scenic cluster. Park Avenue is the strongest short landscape walk when you want fins and towers rather than a single arch objective.
Arches works best when you plan by heat + parking + hike type, not by simply driving from viewpoint to viewpoint. A long desert hike at 2 p.m. can feel completely different from the same route at sunrise.

Arches Is a Desert Hiking Park With Alpine Mountains on the Horizon.
The La Sal Mountains rise above the Moab desert and are a useful reminder that Arches belongs inside a much larger eastern-Utah hiking trip—not as an isolated roadside attraction.
Delicate Arch Trail
If you have only one hiking slot in Arches, use it here. The full trail starts at Wolfe Ranch and climbs open slickrock to the 52-foot-tall Utah icon. NPS lists the route as 3 miles round trip, 2–3 hours, and about 538 feet of elevation change.
The difficulty is not the mileage. There is almost no shade, the slickrock climb is exposed to sun, and the final approach follows a narrow rock ledge for roughly 200 yards. In winter that ledge can become icy.

Devils Garden: Choose Your Commitment Level
Devils Garden is not one hike. It is a network. That is why it works so well for different abilities: you can turn around at Landscape Arch or keep adding fins, arches, scrambling and primitive terrain.

The Primitive Trail is the serious part. NPS describes difficult route-finding, steep slopes, narrow drop-offs and rock scrambling. Do not use it when rock is wet or icy, and do not treat it as a normal maintained loop simply because it appears on a park map.
Fiery Furnace: A Navigation Experience, Not a Normal Trail
Fiery Furnace is a maze of sandstone fins, narrow passages, dead ends, loose sand and short climbing moves. You can only enter on a ranger-guided hike or with a self-guided exploration permit.
Permit Required
Reserve online in advance. NPS says permits may be reserved up to seven days ahead and at least two days before the trip.

Children under five are not allowed, and all members must attend the required orientation.
GPS Is Not Enough
Towering sandstone walls interfere with GPS reliability. Route observation and physical agility matter.

NPS recommends first-time visitors go with a ranger or someone experienced in the Fiery Furnace.

Spring and fall are the best all-around hiking seasons. Summer is completely workable if you start before sunrise or very early, but Delicate Arch and Devils Garden should not be treated like shaded mountain trails. NPS specifically warns hikers to avoid strenuous activity in midday summer heat.
Do You Need a Reservation to Enter Arches?
No advanced timed-entry reservation is required in 2026. Visitors can enter during normal operating hours. The tradeoff is that parking and entrance congestion can become less predictable than under a timed-entry system.
NPS warns that temporary entrance delays or vehicle diversions may occur when popular areas reach capacity. That makes an early hiking start valuable for two reasons: cooler temperatures and better parking odds.
