Ama Dablam Permits & Logistics: 2026 Fees, Lukla Access & Nepal Rules

The most important 2026 correction is simple: Ama Dablam is not a ~$400 NMA trekking-peak permit. Nepal’s Department of Tourism currently lists the foreign-climber royalty at US$1,000 in spring and autumn and US$500 in winter/summer, plus a separate expedition-team garbage deposit and the park, local-entry, visa and transport logistics of the Khumbu.

The direct answer

Budget the Permit as a Department of Tourism Expedition Royalty.

For a foreign climber, Nepal’s current Ama Dablam mountaineering royalty is US$1,000 per person in spring and autumn and US$500 in winter or summer. Those rates took effect September 1, 2025 and remain the current government schedule for 2026.

In addition, the expedition team posts a US$2,000 garbage-management deposit. That is a team-level compliance deposit rather than another $2,000 individual climbing royalty.

A commercial expedition operator normally manages the Department of Tourism permit process, team paperwork and expedition administration. Your job is to make sure the written program clearly identifies what fees, permits and deposits are included—and which costs still sit outside the quote.

What You Actually Need to Budget Before Reaching Base Camp

Separate the government climbing royalty from the park fee, local tourism fee and expedition-level waste deposit. They are different charges with different purposes.

Critical correction: do not use the old “~$400 NMA permit” figure for a 2026 Ama Dablam budget. The current Department of Tourism schedule lists Ama Dablam separately at $1,000 per foreign climber in both spring and autumn.

Put the permit, airfare, operator program, insurance, tips, gear and contingency days into the Expedition Budget Calculator before comparing operator quotes.

02 · Permit process

Your Expedition Company Should Be Managing the Government Workflow

Ama Dablam is a Department of Tourism expedition objective, not a trailhead where an individual climber simply buys a summit ticket on arrival.

1 · Book the expedition

Confirm the operator or Nepal partner that will process the mountain permit and manage the in-country expedition administration.

2 · Submit climber data

Expect to provide passport information, photographs, emergency details, travel dates and whatever climbing résumé or insurance documentation the operator requires.

3 · Government permit processing

The expedition paperwork is processed through Nepal’s Department of Tourism mountaineering-permit system rather than through the NMA trekking-peak permit structure.

4 · Team administration

The operator manages the expedition’s team-level documentation, government procedures, staff paperwork and the garbage deposit.

5 · Carry copies

Keep digital and paper copies of your passport, visa, insurance details, emergency contacts and operator documentation even when the expedition company holds the official permit file.

Ask one simple question before paying a deposit: “Is the current $1,000 Ama Dablam government royalty included in my quoted program price?” Get the answer in writing.

Team-level logistics

The $2,000 Garbage Deposit Belongs to the Expedition System—not Your Personal Permit.

It should normally sit behind the scenes in the operator’s logistics. Before departure, confirm that waste compliance and deposit administration are included rather than discovering an unexpected team charge in Kathmandu.

03 · Documents

Build a Document Folder Before You Fly to Nepal

Expedition paperwork is much easier when the climber and operator are not hunting for passport scans or policy documents after arrival.

Nepal Tourist Visa: Do Not Cut the Calendar Too Close

Visa Current fee Ama Dablam planning use
15 days US$30 Too short for a normal full Ama Dablam expedition.
30 days US$50 May fit a compressed program on paper, but leaves little margin for travel disruption.
90 days US$125 Provides much more calendar flexibility for longer programs, added acclimatization or delays.
Trip length and visa length are different decisions. A 28-day expedition does not mean a 30-day visa is automatically comfortable once international arrival, Kathmandu preparation and flight disruption are added.
04 · Getting into the Khumbu

Do Not Assume Your Lukla Flight Leaves From Kathmandu

Peak-season Everest-region flight logistics can shift scheduled Lukla departures to Manthali Airport at Ramechhap. That changes the first and last days of the expedition.

Peak season

Kathmandu → Ramechhap → Lukla

During busy spring and autumn periods, many scheduled Lukla services operate from Manthali/Ramechhap rather than directly from Kathmandu.

The transfer typically requires a long pre-dawn road journey from Kathmandu before the short mountain flight to Lukla.

Operational rule

The timetable is subordinate to the weather

Lukla is a weather-sensitive mountain airport. Cloud, wind and visibility can delay or cancel flights even when the airline schedule looks normal.

Confirm the actual departure airport with your operator immediately before the expedition rather than relying on an itinerary written months earlier.

Do not book a same-day international connection after Lukla. A delayed Lukla departure plus a Ramechhap road transfer can destroy a tight international-flight connection even after the climbing itself goes perfectly.
Ama Dablam viewed from Pangboche on the approach through the Khumbu
The approach is acclimatization

Lukla to Base Camp Is Not Dead Travel Time.

The lodge approach through Namche, Tengboche and Pangboche is part of the altitude strategy. Compressing it solely to save calendar days can arrive you at the technical mountain with less physiological margin.

05 · Approach logistics

A Typical Ama Dablam Access Sequence

Exact itineraries vary, especially when teams add Island Peak, Lobuche East or extra acclimatization. The core Khumbu sequence is consistent.

Kathmandu

Arrival, visa check, expedition briefing, permit/document administration, equipment review and final packing.

Ramechhap / Lukla

Peak-season itineraries may require the road transfer to Manthali before flying to Lukla. Off-peak arrangements can differ.

Phakding

Common first trekking night after Lukla, keeping the opening day moderate rather than racing immediately to altitude.

Namche Bazaar

Main Khumbu staging and acclimatization hub. Most sensible itineraries include additional time here rather than treating Namche as a one-night transit stop.

Tengboche / Pangboche

Continue deeper into the upper Khumbu while gaining sleeping altitude progressively and moving closer to Ama Dablam.

Ama Dablam Base Camp

Transition from lodge trekking to expedition camp life, technical preparation, acclimatization rotations and the Southwest Ridge climb.

For the physiological side of that progression, use the Ama Dablam Acclimatization Guide .

06 · TIMS confusion

Do Not Automatically Add an Old $20 TIMS Fee to Every Ama Dablam Budget

This is an area where trekking rules and expedition administration are often copied incorrectly from old webpages.

Current planning approach: Nepal Tourism Board’s revised TIMS rules name several Everest-region trekking itineraries, including Everest Base Camp and other Khumbu routes. They do not simply define “Ama Dablam expedition = universal $20 TIMS card” in the way older climbing pages often claim.
What to do

Ask the operator exactly what is issued

Request a written list separating the Department of Tourism mountaineering permit, Sagarmatha park entry, Khumbu Trek-Card/local fee and any TIMS documentation required by your particular trekking itinerary.

What not to do

Do not copy an old permit table

A historic “TIMS $20” line is not sufficient evidence that the same document, price and process apply unchanged to a 2026 Ama Dablam expedition.

Logistics become safety systems

Insurance Language Matters More on Ama Dablam Than the Brand Name on the Policy.

The policy has to match technical climbing, the actual altitude, emergency medical treatment and the evacuation system available in Nepal. A generic travel policy may not do that.

07 · Rescue & insurance

Verify the Activity and Altitude in Writing

Insurance is not a permit, but it belongs in the logistics plan before the expedition deposit becomes non-refundable.

Activity

Technical mountaineering

Confirm that fixed-rope climbing, crampons, ice and mixed terrain are not excluded by a general trekking-only policy.

Altitude

6,812 metres

A policy limited to trekking below 5,000 or 6,000 metres is not an Ama Dablam climbing policy.

Evacuation

Understand the rescue chain

Helicopters can be important lower on the mountain, but insurance does not create a helicopter rescue capability from every camp or every weather condition.

High-altitude rescue planning belongs in the booking decision.

Protect Both Ends of the Expedition With Real Buffer

The two logistics systems most likely to ignore your airline ticket are Himalayan weather and Lukla aviation.

Before the climb

Arrive in Kathmandu with enough time for baggage problems, permit administration, gear checks and changed domestic-flight logistics.

During the climb

Weather contingency belongs inside the expedition itinerary rather than being borrowed from the return-travel schedule.

After Lukla

Leave meaningful time between the planned return from the Khumbu and your international departure from Kathmandu.

If using Manthali

Remember that landing at Ramechhap still leaves a substantial road journey before you are back in Kathmandu.

A successful summit does not guarantee an on-time flight home. Do not spend every contingency day on the mountain and leave zero transport margin at the end of the trip.
09 · Avoid double-counting

A Permit Table Is Not an Expedition Cost Table

Keep this page focused on legal and logistical access. The complete trip budget belongs elsewhere in the cluster.

Permit

Government royalty

The current foreign-climber Ama Dablam royalty is a defined government charge: $1,000 in spring/autumn.

Operator program

Expedition service

Guides, Sherpa support, meals, tents, rope systems, communications and staffing are commercial services—not government permit fees.

Personal travel

Airfare, hotels, gear & insurance

These may sit outside a quoted expedition price even when every Nepal permit is included.

Compare current commercial structures on the Ama Dablam Operators page rather than turning this permit guide into a second operator ranking.

Finish the Permit Check—Then Check the Climber

Ama Dablam’s efficient commercial infrastructure should not be confused with beginner-level climbing.

Experience

Technical systems should already be familiar

Fixed-line ascent and descent, crampons, exposure, rope transitions, technical alpine terrain and functioning around 6,000 metres should not all be new on Ama Dablam.

Progression

Close the missing skill—not a random peak

Island Peak, Lobuche East, Mera Peak and equivalent alpine objectives each solve different readiness gaps.

Use the Mountain Readiness Assessment before treating completed paperwork as a green light to climb.

Then compare specific progression options in What to Climb Before Ama Dablam .

Frequently asked questions

Ama Dablam Permits & Logistics FAQ

The biggest 2026 correction is the government royalty: use the current Department of Tourism schedule, not the old ~$400 figure.

How much is the Ama Dablam permit in 2026?

Nepal’s Department of Tourism currently lists the foreign-climber Ama Dablam royalty at US$1,000 per person in spring and autumn and US$500 in winter or summer.

Is Ama Dablam an NMA trekking-peak permit?

No. The current government royalty for Ama Dablam is published by Nepal’s Department of Tourism as a dedicated mountaineering-expedition rate. Do not use older pages that describe it as a ~$400 NMA permit.

How much is the Ama Dablam garbage deposit?

The government schedule lists a US$2,000 garbage-management deposit for an Ama Dablam expedition team. It is a team-level compliance deposit, not another $2,000 per climber royalty.

How much is Sagarmatha National Park entry?

Nepal Tourism Board currently lists Sagarmatha National Park entry at NPR 3,000 per foreign visitor per entry.

What is the Khumbu local entry fee?

Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality currently lists its Trek-Card / tourism fee at NPR 3,000 for most foreign nationals and NPR 2,000 for SAARC and Chinese visitors.

Do Ama Dablam climbers need a TIMS card?

Do not assume a universal fixed Ama Dablam TIMS fee from an old article. Current Nepal Tourism Board rules list specific Everest-region trekking itineraries under TIMS. Ask your expedition operator exactly which trekking documentation is being issued for your approach.

Do Lukla flights always leave Kathmandu?

No. During busy spring and autumn periods, scheduled Lukla services may operate from Manthali Airport in Ramechhap instead. Confirm the departure airport shortly before the expedition.

How long should a Nepal visa be for Ama Dablam?

Nepal currently offers tourist visas of 15, 30 and 90 days. Many Ama Dablam expeditions occupy roughly a month once Kathmandu, approach, climbing and return logistics are included, so leave enough visa margin for weather or aviation delays.

Can I get the Ama Dablam climbing permit myself?

Commercial Ama Dablam expeditions normally process the Department of Tourism permit and team-level expedition administration through the Nepal expedition operator or local partner. Confirm the exact process with the company running your climb.

How do you reach Ama Dablam Base Camp?

Most teams enter the Khumbu through Lukla, then trek via the Namche, Tengboche and Pangboche corridor before reaching Ama Dablam Base Camp. The approach is also an important part of acclimatization.
