Redundancy is survival. On a day hike, losing a glove is an annoyance. At 8,400 m it can cost you fingers. The Frostbite-Prevention Trinity
Three items do more to keep you alive and whole than anything else on the list. Get these right before you worry about the rest:

Technical Climbing Gear
The South Col route is fixed-rope-and-ladder terrain rather than a technical face climb, but you still carry and must be fluent with a full personal kit:

- Ascender (jumar) + safety — for the fixed lines, with a backup tether and a belay/rappel device for the descents.

Big, expensive, occasional-use items — a down suit, sometimes even 8,000 m boots — can be rented or bought in Kathmandu, which can save serious money on a once-in-a-lifetime climb. But fit-critical gear, above all boots, is best owned, fitted, and tested with your crampons long before you fly. Blisters or a poor crampon fit at altitude can end your expedition or cost you toes. As a rule: rent the bulky insulation if budget demands it, but own and rehearse everything that touches your feet or your safety system.
