First, it sends and, on two-way devices, receives text messages, so you can check in with family, coordinate with partners, or update plans from deep in the backcountry. Second, and most important, it has an SOS function that sends your location and a distress signal to a rescue coordination center. Most modern devices run on the Iridium satellite network, which covers the entire planet from pole to pole, so coverage holds even in remote mountains and high latitudes. The device is only half the system: two-way messengers require an ongoing subscription to work, while personal locator beacons use a free government network for SOS only.
Messenger vs PLB vs phone
Three categories solve the problem in different ways. Most climbers should understand all three before choosing.
Two-way satellite messenger

How the SOS actually works
Understanding the chain of events makes you use the feature correctly, and only when you should.
