Annapurna II: the eastern sentinel of the Annapurna range
Annapurna II is a serious, rarely-climbed 7,937 m (26,040 ft) peak that anchors the eastern end of Nepal’s Annapurna massif. It is the sixteenth-highest mountain in the world and one of the range’s most technically demanding summits, yet it is often confused with its far more famous and far deadlier neighbour, Annapurna I. What Annapurna II is, is a long, technical, rarely-climbed 7,937 m mountain with a complex West Ridge, a steep summit pyramid, and real objective hazard.
There is no commercial or guided program for the summit and only a handful of confirmed ascents in its history. For almost everyone, Annapurna II is a peak to see from the Annapurna Circuit rather than to climb.

Annapurna II is not Annapurna I
The single most important thing to understand about this mountain is which mountain it is.
Annapurna I and Annapurna II are two separate mountains about 32 km apart in the same massif. Annapurna I (8,091 m) is the tenth-highest mountain on Earth, one of the fourteen eight-thousanders, and famous for having among the highest fatality rates of any major peak. Annapurna II (7,937 m) is lower, is not an eight-thousander, and sits at the eastern end of the range. When you read about “Annapurna’s” fearsome death rate, that is Annapurna I. It does not describe this peak.
The confusion is understandable. The two share a name, a massif, and a reputation for seriousness, and casual sources often blur them together. But conflating the two produces real errors: Annapurna II has never carried the statistical death toll of Annapurna I, and it is a different climbing problem with a different route history. The routes of Annapurna II
Annapurna II is climbed rarely and by few lines. The West Ridge is the standard; the rest are the preserve of elite alpinists.
West Ridge (via Annapurna IV)
The classic route approaches from the north and climbs first onto Annapurna IV (7,525 m), following the line of that peak’s 1955 first ascent, then branches onto the long west ridge that connects to Annapurna II. After a slight loss of altitude along the ridge, climbers reach the base of the final summit pyramid near 7,200 m, where a 45-50 degree rock rib gives difficult, exposed climbing to the top. It is a sustained, committing route with complex route-finding, and it remains the line by which nearly every ascent of Annapurna II has been made.
South Face
The south face of Annapurna II is a huge, steep wall in the tradition of the great Annapurna south faces, and it is very rarely attempted. It demands elite technical ability on sustained steep ground at altitude and carries heavy objective hazard. It is not a route for any but the most experienced Himalayan alpinists.
North Face variant
A Japanese team established an alternative by climbing the steep north face and then traversing to join the upper West Ridge. Like the other non-standard lines, it has seen little repeat traffic and remains an expert objective rather than an established trade route.
The 1960 first ascent
A landmark climb that helped launch one of mountaineering’s most famous careers.
Annapurna II was first climbed on May 17, 1960, by a British-Indian-Nepalese Combined Services Expedition led by Lieutenant Colonel J.O.M. (Jimmy) Roberts, a towering figure in the history of Nepalese mountaineering and trekking. The team worked its way up the north face and northwest ridge of Annapurna IV, established a high camp on the shoulder where the long west ridge branches toward Annapurna II, and placed a final camp near the base of the summit pyramid at about 7,200 m. From there, Richard Grant, Chris Bonington, and Ang Nyima Sherpa climbed the steep final rib to the summit, reaching the top at 4:30 in the afternoon. At the time, Annapurna II was one of the highest unclimbed peaks in the world. For Bonington, then a young army officer, it was one of his first major Himalayan expeditions, the start of a career that would include the 1970 Annapurna South Face and 1975 Everest Southwest Face climbs. The route has been repeated only a few times since, including a Slovenian ascent in 1969 and a later winter ascent, underlining how seldom the mountain is climbed.

Difficulty & safety
Annapurna II is more technical than many higher mountains, and its danger is real, but it is not Annapurna I’s danger.
Annapurna II earns its reputation for seriousness on the ground rather than in a statistic. The standard West Ridge is long and complex, with sustained snow, ice, and mixed climbing, a demanding summit pyramid, and objective hazards that include avalanche-prone faces, unstable ice, and rockfall exposure. Modern parties often favour the connecting ridge from Annapurna IV precisely to avoid the worst of these dangers, which itself tells you how serious the more direct ground is. The mountain has had only a handful of confirmed ascents, a scarcity that reflects both its difficulty and the logistical effort of reaching it.
The frightening Annapurna fatality figures you may have seen, often quoted as roughly one death for every two or three summits, refer to Annapurna I (8,091 m), the eight-thousander, not to Annapurna II. There is no comparably robust, widely-cited death-rate figure for Annapurna II, largely because it has been climbed so rarely. Treat the two mountains as separate on safety as on everything else, and do not apply Annapurna I’s statistics to this peak.
Season & access
Annapurna II follows the Nepal Himalaya’s climbing rhythm, but is attempted so rarely that there is no established commercial calendar.
Serious attempts on Annapurna II fall in the standard Nepal Himalayan windows: the pre-monsoon spring (roughly April to May, the season of the 1960 first ascent) and the post-monsoon autumn (roughly late September to November), when weather is most settled and the monsoon snow has stabilised or cleared. Winter and monsoon attempts are extraordinarily rare and far more dangerous. Climbing requires a Nepal peak permit and the usual expedition logistics arranged through a Nepali operator, with a liaison officer and local staff, but because so few teams attempt the mountain there is no off-the-shelf guided program the way there is for the trekking peaks or the commercial eight-thousanders. Any expedition here is effectively a bespoke undertaking for an experienced team.
Seeing Annapurna II from the trail
For the overwhelming majority of visitors, the realistic way to experience Annapurna II is from below, not from the summit.
Annapurna II stands as the eastern sentinel of the range, and it is one of the defining skyline peaks of the Annapurna Circuit, one of Nepal’s most celebrated treks. From the Manang side and the eastern approaches, the mountain dominates the horizon, and no technical climbing is required to stand beneath it and take in its full height.
