15 Best Hikes in October in the Southern Hemisphere
October’s best Southern Hemisphere hiking starts in Tasmania and southwest Australia, then shifts toward Patagonia as the month advances. The Overland Track’s normal booked season begins October 1. Cape to Cape is in spring. Torres del Paine’s W Trek re-enters the conversation, but the O Circuit remains closed through October 31, 2026. In New Zealand, favor coastal tracks until Kepler’s Great Walk season starts October 27.
Where should you hike in the Southern Hemisphere in October?
Choose Tasmania if you want the cleanest October trekking decision. The Overland Track’s formal booking season begins October 1, while Three Capes is a strong hut-based spring option. Choose Western Australia for Cape to Cape wildflowers and coastal trekking.
Choose Patagonia if your dates fall later in October and you are willing to plan around spring variability. The W Trek is viable, and El Chaltén’s Laguna de los Tres becomes increasingly attractive as the month progresses. Do not build an October trip around Torres del Paine’s O Circuit: CONAF currently keeps it closed through October 31.
Choose lower New Zealand first. Abel Tasman, Queen Charlotte and Rakiura fit October far better than pretending Milford or Routeburn are ordinary spring hikes. Kepler changes status on October 27, when its 2026/27 Great Walk season begins.
Early, mid or late October?
The calendar is unusually important because several famous southern routes change operational status during or immediately after this month.
Australia leads
Start with Overland, Three Capes, Cape to Cape, Great Ocean Walk and Blue Mountains. Abel Tasman, Queen Charlotte and Rakiura work well in New Zealand. Peru’s Laguna 69 still has a weather-window case. Patagonia is opening, but early spring needs more margin.
Patagonia moves up
The W Trek becomes a stronger proposition as the summer operating system settles in. El Chaltén day hikes can be excellent when trails are clear, but snow and mud remain realistic. Tasmania and southwest Australia remain high-confidence choices.
The south keeps opening
Late October is the strongest Patagonia slice of the month. Kepler joins the normal Great Walk system on October 27. Routeburn and Milford still wait until November 1, and Torres del Paine’s O Circuit remains closed through October 31 under the current CONAF schedule.
What is actually in season?
This table is more useful than a generic weather chart because it separates normal seasonal operation from shoulder-season possibility.
| Route | October status | 2026 planning fact | Decision |
|---|---|---|---|
| Overland Track | Go | Booked season starts Oct 1 and runs through May 31. | Top October choice; carry full alpine weather gear. |
| W Trek | Go with margin | Winter guide extension ended Sep 15; W operates into spring/summer. | Better mid–late month; recheck CONAF and accommodation. |
| O Circuit | Wait | Closed through Oct 31, 2026 under current CONAF schedule. | Plan November or later only after official reopening. |
| Abel Tasman | Go | Bookings year-round; Oct begins the Oct–Apr pricing period. | Best NZ all-month option; plan Awaroa tide crossing. |
| Kepler Track | Date-specific | Great Walk season starts Oct 27, 2026. | Normal booked-season choice only Oct 27–31. |
| Routeburn | Wait | Great Walk season starts Nov 1, 2026. | October is outside-season alpine travel. |
| Milford Track | Wait | Great Walk season starts Nov 1, 2026. | Do not market as a normal October Great Walk. |
| Laguna 69 | Early only | Huascarán recommended season runs through Oct; rainy season begins Oct. | Early month is stronger than late month. |

Overland Track
October 1 is a real operational boundary, not a vague shoulder-season suggestion. Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service starts the Overland Track booking season on October 1, with north-to-south travel and daily departure controls. That makes October the first month when the classic six-day Cradle Mountain-to-Lake St Clair traverse operates under its normal booked-season system.
Cape to Cape Track
October lands squarely in southwest Western Australia’s spring. The Cape to Cape follows 130 kilometres between Cape Naturaliste and Cape Leeuwin through beaches, limestone cliffs, forest and one of Australia’s great wildflower landscapes. Unlike alpine spring routes, snow is not the limiting variable.
W Trek
October is the month Torres del Paine changes from winter management toward its summer trekking system. CONAF’s 2026 winter guide requirement for the W and Base Torres was extended only through September 15, while the park says the summer season normally begins in September. By October, the W is the classic way to enter Patagonia before peak-summer crowds.
Three Capes Track
Three Capes is one of the cleanest October travel choices on the page: a bookable 48-kilometre hut-based itinerary through Tasman National Park, with spring coastal heath and enormous sea cliffs. Tasmania PWS markets it as a four-day, three-night experience, so the logistics are much more contained than a self-supported alpine traverse.
Abel Tasman Coast Track
Abel Tasman is the best New Zealand answer to October because it does not require pretending the Southern Alps are already in summer condition. DOC requires hut and campsite bookings year-round; the 1 October–30 April pricing period starts with this month. Beaches, forest, water-taxi flexibility and low elevation make it unusually adaptable for spring.
Otter Trail
The Otter Trail gives October a strong South African coastal option with a very different rhythm from Tasmania or Patagonia. SANParks lists a five-day, 45-kilometre route from Storms River through the Garden Route’s cliffs, forest, beaches and river crossings. Spring temperatures make the coast attractive before midsummer heat.
Laguna de los Tres
October is when El Chaltén begins to make sense again for ordinary hikers, but the final third of the month deserves a higher score than the first week. Argentina’s national park service lists Laguna de los Tres at 25 kilometres and roughly 8–9 hours, reaching the closest major hiking viewpoint beneath Fitz Roy.
Great Ocean Walk
Parks Victoria describes the Great Ocean Walk as more than 100 kilometres from Apollo Bay to the Twelve Apostles. October brings spring to the Otways: long coastal views, forest, waterfalls and cooler walking conditions before summer. The route can be done end-to-end or split into shorter stages.
Queen Charlotte Track
DOC lists the Queen Charlotte Track at 73.5 kilometres from Meretoto/Ship Cove to Anakiwa. October works because the route stays in the Marlborough Sounds rather than crossing a high alpine pass. Spring forest, water views and multiple accommodation styles make it easier to adapt around weather.
Rakiura Track
October 1 begins DOC’s higher-season pricing period on Rakiura, and the huts and campsites are bookable year-round. The route avoids high alpine terrain and instead gives spring forest, coastal walking and a strong wildlife focus on Stewart Island.
Grand Canyon Track
This is the best short Australian counterweight to a list dominated by multi-day treks. NSW National Parks lists the Grand Canyon Track near Blackheath as a 6.3-kilometre Grade 3 loop taking about 3–4 hours, with waterfalls, creek crossings and shaded canyon scenery that suits spring.
Grampians Peaks Trail
The Grampians Peaks Trail is one of Australia’s serious long-distance mountain routes, with Parks Victoria listing a 164-kilometre north-to-south traverse over 13 days. Spring is attractive, and the trail can also be broken into shorter itineraries if two weeks is too much.
Kepler Track
Kepler is the most date-specific recommendation on the page. DOC’s 2026/27 Great Walk season starts on October 27, earlier than the November 1 start for Milford and Routeburn. That gives the final five days of October a legitimate serviced-season Fiordland option.
Platteklip Gorge to Table Mountain
Platteklip is the direct hiking route up Table Mountain’s front face. SANParks describes it as relentlessly steep but straightforward to follow, with a huge Cape Town and Table Bay payoff. October’s spring conditions make it a strong city-based hiking day that does not require a multi-day trekking commitment.
Laguna 69
Peru drops sharply from September’s dominance, but it does not disappear. SERNANP currently lists Huascarán National Park’s recommended visiting season as May through October, so an early-October Laguna 69 day can still work for an acclimatized Huaraz traveler.

October earns its place because the hiking season is returning—not because summer has arrived.
The W Trek and El Chaltén move up the ranking as the month progresses. That distinction is the heart of October planning: late month can be excellent, while early month may still carry snow, mud and service limitations.
W Trek yes. O Circuit no. El Chaltén later.
Patagonia is the region most likely to be oversold in an October list.
Use the W as the October anchor
CONAF extended winter guide requirements on the W and Base Torres only through September 15, 2026 because of actual trail conditions. That is useful evidence that management is transitioning out of winter—but it is not permission to ignore a new storm or closure.
Plan Chilean Patagonia →Do not quietly substitute the O
The Macizo Paine/O Circuit is officially closed through October 31, 2026. CONAF says reopening from November remains subject to conditions and safety. The W and O should not be treated as interchangeable October products.
Compare W vs O →El Chaltén improves late
Laguna de los Tres and Laguna Torre are town-based day hikes, so they can exploit individual clear-weather windows better than a fixed hut itinerary. Late October gets the stronger recommendation, but fresh snow or mud can still change the day.
Plan Argentine Patagonia →Reserve flexibility, not certainty
Use cancellable lodging where possible, allow spare weather days and avoid stacking your only Fitz Roy day directly before a flight. October’s value is lower crowd pressure and reopening access, not a stable-weather guarantee.
Open El Chaltén hiking →
October rewards lower terrain until the calendar says otherwise.
Abel Tasman, Queen Charlotte and Rakiura avoid the central problem on higher routes: spring on the calendar can still mean winter snow, avalanche terrain and reduced services in the mountains.
October has three different New Zealand seasons inside one month
The coastal tracks, Kepler and the November-opening Great Walks should not be bundled together.
Abel Tasman
Year-round booking, low elevation and water-taxi flexibility make it the strongest normal New Zealand October trek. Build the itinerary around the Awaroa tide rather than treating the crossing as optional.
Queen Charlotte + Rakiura
Both avoid high alpine passes. Queen Charlotte favors coastal views and flexible accommodation; Rakiura favors forest, mud and wildlife.
Kepler changes status
DOC’s 2026/27 Great Walk season begins October 27. Before that date the alpine section belongs to an outside-season skill and equipment framework; after it, the normal booked Great Walk system is in place.
Milford + Routeburn can wait
Both start their Great Walk seasons November 1. An expert can travel outside season, but that is not the trip a searcher asking for the best ordinary October hikes is usually trying to plan.
October shifts from desert to southern spring
This is why Australia places so many routes in the top half of the ranking.
| Route | October role | Main advantage | Main caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Overland Track | #1 overall | Booked season starts Oct 1 | Cold, wet and wind still possible |
| Cape to Cape | Top spring coast | Wildflowers + coastal scenery | Wind, rain, sand |
| Three Capes | Polished hut trip | 48 km / four-day fixed itinerary | Maritime weather |
| Great Ocean Walk | Long spring coast | Forest + Southern Ocean | Camp and transport logistics |
| Grampians Peaks | Late-month experienced option | Rugged spring ridges | Current road closures through Oct 29 in parts of park |
| Larapinta | Do not prioritize | Excellent route—wrong side of its best season | NT guidance puts best period Apr–Sep; heat builds in Oct |

October is the edge of the Cordillera Blanca season, not a second September.
Huascarán National Park still lists October inside its recommended visiting season, but it also lists October as the beginning of the rainy period. That is why Laguna 69 appears low in the ranking and only for early-month dates.
Famous hikes not worth forcing into October
A seasonal guide becomes more useful when it tells you to wait.
O Circuit
CONAF’s current park page keeps the Macizo Paine/O Circuit closed through October 31, 2026. November is the earliest planning target, and even then reopening is conditional.
Routeburn Track
Great Walk season starts November 1. October is outside-season alpine travel with snow and avalanche concerns, not a normal Great Walk recommendation.
Milford Track
The 2026/27 Great Walk season also starts November 1. Outside season means less managed hazards and a very different skill requirement.
Falls to Hotham Alpine Crossing
Parks Victoria does not recommend the alpine crossing during June–October unless the party is equipped and experienced for snow. Wait for the normal hiking transition.
Full Larapinta Trail
Northern Territory guidance identifies April–September as the best trekking period. October can work for selected short sections in cool weather, but it is no longer a top full-traverse month.
Long high-Andes circuits
October can still produce excellent days, but the rainy-season transition reduces the advantage that made Huayhuash, Santa Cruz and Ausangate top September recommendations. Do not copy the September ranking forward unchanged.
How the ranking was built
The score asks how good the route is in October, not how famous it is worldwide.
| Factor | Weight | October question |
|---|---|---|
| Weather suitability | 25% | Is the month normally workable without requiring winter-alpine assumptions? |
| Normal access / operations | 25% | Are permits, huts, roads and the route operating in their intended seasonal mode? |
| Seasonal scenery | 20% | Does October add wildflowers, spring vegetation, longer daylight or reopening landscapes? |
| Crowd / booking value | 10% | Does October improve the trip compared with peak summer? |
| Trip flexibility | 10% | Can weather days, sections or transport be adjusted without losing the trip? |
| Overall route quality | 10% | Would the route justify a dedicated trip without the seasonal bonus? |

October Southern Hemisphere hiking questions
Direct answers to the date-sensitive questions that matter most this month.
Where is the best place to hike in the Southern Hemisphere in October?
Tasmania is the strongest all-around October choice because the Overland Track’s booked walking season begins October 1 and Three Capes is also in a strong spring window. Western Australia’s Cape to Cape Track is another excellent all-month choice. Patagonia improves as October progresses.
Is October a good month for hiking in Patagonia?
Yes, but October is a reopening month rather than peak summer. The W Trek becomes increasingly attractive, especially from mid to late October, and El Chaltén day hikes improve later in the month. Torres del Paine’s O Circuit is officially closed through October 31, 2026.
Can I hike the Torres del Paine O Circuit in October 2026?
No under the current CONAF schedule. The Macizo Paine or O Circuit is officially closed through October 31, 2026, and any change will be announced by CONAF. The W Trek is the relevant October multi-day option.
Can I hike the Routeburn Track in October 2026?
DOC treats October as outside the Routeburn Great Walk season. The 2026/27 season starts November 1. Outside season, alpine winter hazards remain and the track is suitable only for experienced, well-equipped parties.
Can I hike the Milford Track in October 2026?
October is outside Milford’s Great Walk season. The 2026/27 season starts November 1. DOC warns that outside-season travel can involve snow, ice, flooding and a higher level of backcountry skill.
When does the Kepler Track Great Walk season start in 2026?
The Kepler Track’s 2026/27 Great Walk season starts October 27, 2026. That makes October 27–31 a legitimate late-month opening, while earlier October remains an outside-season alpine undertaking.
Is October good for the Overland Track?
Yes. Tasmania’s Overland Track booking season runs from October 1 through May 31. October is spring, so walkers still need full preparation for severe cold, wind and rain despite being inside the normal booked season.
What is the best New Zealand hike in October?
Abel Tasman Coast Track is the strongest all-month choice because it is coastal, lower elevation and bookable year-round. Queen Charlotte and Rakiura are also good shoulder-season options. Kepler becomes a standard Great Walk choice only from October 27.
Is October still good for hiking in Peru?
It can be, but the margin is shrinking. SERNANP lists Huascarán National Park’s recommended visiting season through October while also identifying October as the start of the rainy season. Early October is therefore stronger than late October for Cordillera Blanca hiking.
Which October hike is best for beginners?
For a short day hike, Grand Canyon Track in Australia’s Blue Mountains is the most approachable route in this ranking. Abel Tasman is the easiest multi-day style because water taxis and section hiking create flexibility, though huts or campsites still need bookings.
Start in Australia. Move toward Patagonia. Let New Zealand’s calendar tell you when the alpine season is real.
October is one of the best months for travelers who can use shoulder-season judgment. Tasmania and southwest Australia are already strong. Patagonia improves week by week. New Zealand’s coastal tracks work all month, while the famous alpine Great Walks need exact opening dates—not wishful thinking.
