What the Score Means

How the Hiking Difficulty Score Is Calculated

Time estimate
The baseline uses roughly 2.5 mph on flat ground plus additional time for climbing. The calculator then slows the estimate for rough terrain, high altitude and heavier packs. It returns a range because real pace varies substantially.
What the score is for
Use it to compare hikes, select a realistic day objective and understand which route factor is creating the difficulty. Do not use it as a technical climbing grade, avalanche rating, weather forecast or medical-risk tool.

How does the calculator work?
It combines distance, elevation gain, maximum altitude, pack weight, terrain and optional exposure into a 100-point effort score. The individual factor scores are shown so you can see why the result moved.
Does it measure technical climbing difficulty?
No. It estimates hiking effort. Technical terrain, snow, ice, glacier travel, avalanche exposure and route-finding must be evaluated separately.
How is hiking time estimated?
The tool starts with a distance-and-climbing baseline, then adjusts for rough terrain, altitude and pack weight. The displayed time is intentionally a range.
Why does altitude add points?
Higher elevations can reduce sustainable pace and recovery, particularly for people who are not acclimatized.
Can I use this for trail running?
Only as a rough route-effort reference. Running pace and race effort behave differently from hiking.
What score is considered hard?
45–64 is Hard, 65–79 Very Hard and 80–100 Extreme. Always review technical and environmental risk separately.
