Manaslu Gear List: Equipping for 8,163m
Manaslu demands 8,000m-rated gear across every category. The temperature range from Base Camp to the summit spans roughly 60°C, and summit-night conditions can push wind chill below -50°C. There is no margin for gear failure in the death zone.
This checklist is organized by category. Use the checkboxes to track what you own, what needs purchasing, and what you plan to rent in Kathmandu. Verify all gear with your operator before departure — some guided expeditions provide certain items (tents, fixed ropes, group oxygen) as part of the package.
Do not pack gear you haven’t worn and tested — especially boots and crampons. Fit issues discovered at Base Camp are very difficult to resolve. Wear your high-altitude boots on training hikes in the months before the expedition.
Down Suit & High-Altitude Boots
These two items define your safety margin in the death zone. They must be rated for temperatures below -40°C and must fit perfectly — both with and without crampons on the boots.

Oxygen Systems for Manaslu
Most commercial climbers on Manaslu use supplemental oxygen above Camp 3 or Camp 4. Your operator will typically advise on how many bottles to carry. Discuss your oxygen strategy before departure — flow rates, sleeping vs climbing rates, and bottle counts affect your cost significantly.
- O2 regulator (Topout, Summit O2, or similar)Critical
- Oxygen mask (full face preferred)Critical
- O2 bottles — qty per operator advice (4–8)Critical
- Regulator-to-mask connection testedCritical
- Spare regulator (shared or personal)Important

Bottles are heavy and expensive to ship internationally. Most climbers purchase O2 bottles through their operator in Kathmandu, where they are sourced locally. Budget $500–$700 per bottle and plan for 4–8 depending on your strategy.
