The Matterhorn is a technical alpine climb — steep, exposed, and demanding real mountaineering skill. That’s why experienced climbers bristle at the question. A fit hiker with a great guide and good weather can be walked up Everest’s fixed lines over many weeks of acclimatization — but that same person would be genuinely dangerous on the Matterhorn, where you must move fast and confidently over exposed rock with a long way to fall. Conversely, a skilled alpinist who floats up the Matterhorn in a morning might be stopped cold by Everest’s altitude. They’re not two points on one ladder; they’re two different tests.

Everest: the altitude giant

Everest’s difficulty is almost entirely about altitude. Its normal routes — the South Col from Nepal and the North Ridge from Tibet — are non-technical: the dangerous sections are fixed with ropes and ladders, and no hard free climbing is required. What makes it brutal is everything else — the death zone above 8,000 metres where the body cannot recover, the cold, the six-to-nine-week expedition, the reliance on supplemental oxygen, and the objective hazards of the icefall and high slopes. Which is more dangerous?
Both have killed many climbers — for very different reasons.
The Matterhorn is one of the deadliest peaks in the Alps by sheer number of fatalities, but that toll comes largely from its popularity combined with its hazards: rockfall on the Hörnli Ridge, parties benighted after moving too slowly, and inexperienced climbers on exposed terrain. Everest’s dangers are those of extreme altitude and a long stay on a big mountain — the death zone, avalanches, the Khumbu Icefall, and the cumulative risk of weeks at height.
