Altitude & Death Zone

The most important number in this comparison is not the elevation difference alone. It is the threshold Aconcagua does not cross. At 6,961 m, Aconcagua is extremely high: sleep, appetite, warmth, and decision-making can all deteriorate. Summit day from high camp is a serious altitude effort, and climbers without prior high-altitude experience fail often.

Route Style & Skills

Aconcagua’s Normal Route is often called non-technical, and that is accurate in narrow climbing terms. Most guided clients do not use ropes, do not cross major glaciers, and do not climb steep ice on the standard route. The hard parts are carrying enough, moving slowly enough, sleeping high enough, eating when you feel awful, and waiting through wind without wasting your summit window.

Everest’s standard South Col route is also not a technical face climb in the way K2 or the Eiger North Face are technical.
